Im trying to figure out the number thats stamped on a WWII vintage Garand. Its on the right side of the stock it has AA and a 5 digit number. Possibly Army Airbourne but thats aguess. ANyone knwo for sure or if you could dircet me to a web site that may have the info i'd appreciate it.

I had a couple of those that were stocked in walnut and were stamped the same way. The stocks were very dark and slightly oversized. They weren't completely finished either. Both of those rifles also had an aluminum tag on the front swivel with the same number and the name of an ordnance repair depot. Other than that, nothing else. The number on the stock didn't match anything and were to high to be rack numbers. They both had the same AA prefix and 5 digit numbers that you describe.

If anyone actually knows the significance of these markings, I would like to know for sure as well.

Ive emailed a couple of the american garand gurus on that. Ill let you know if something comes up.

AA is Augusta Arsenal, BA is Benicia Arsenal, RR is Red River. Those are but a few of the rebuild depots. One that caused conjecture amost a group one time was LEAD. You should have heard what it meant. It's LEtterkenny Army Depot. All these places did rebuilds and I would have to see the numbers but I think they're the years rebuilt.

Great to know its the armoury that rebuilt it. The op rod and trigger group are post WWII. Number is 38564.

Thanks browningautorifle. I appreciate the information. I doubt that the number is the date as from what I can rember, all of the digits, not including the prefix letters were 5 numbers. They may indicate how many were built. The number might correlate with a date in some ledger.

The stock on my Garand is marked the same way. The serial number on the receiver puts it as 1942 production, and it has a 1952 dated barrel.

Can't see how the AA stock marking is any kind of a date, but I would be interested in what it means. Same with the other stock markings RA and P.

Maybe WRA?

Look at the right receiver leg....it may have the armourers name and the month and year the rifle was rebuilt at Augusta scribed in with electric pencil.
Most of the ones rebuilt from the mid-fifties thru Vietnam had this info.
