I have a Garand receiver. It was made in Italy by Breda.

I would like to assemble a rifle based on this receiver and I am wondering where are the best sources for Garand parts in Canada.

I know that Marstar has some parts; however, they do not have a full selection.

Suggestions please.

Thank you

Unfortunately commercial parts sources in Canada have pretty much dried up.:(

This leaves the following possibilities;
1. Watch the EE or put in a WTB ad. Be patient because things do show up.

2. Try ebay for US vendors, but be careful of the $100 US export limit and avoid sensitive components like bolts. Some vendors in Italy and Greece will also ship.

3. Try Sarco and Numrich/GPC subject to the same limitations. New stocks can be had from Boyds subject to the $100 limit.

You will need a barrel block and receiver wrench to install a barrel along with a set of headspace gauges to fit a bolt. A finishing reamer will be necessary to fit a bolt with a new barrel. When all is said and done you might be further ahead to sell your receiver and buy a complete rifle.

A recenty obtained op rod from greece was about $150. Appears to be either NOS or refurbed well in the past. Revision 6 SA with narrow cut. Button mic'd at 0.526.

Tradex has some Garand components as well.

Where you are matters.
Building an M1 Rifle from parts will cost as much or more than buying a whole rifle. Have a look at Gunparts' site to get an idea how much. New barrels aren't hard to come by, but your smithy will need the right tools.
Barrels from the U.S. require their export permit. There are some Canadian dealers for the major barrel makers. Douglas, etc. Save you a lot of mucking about with the export permit.
"...Price to expect?..." Op rods are expensive. They start at $105.40US for a used one, at Gunparts. They go up from there according to the manufacturer. They wanted $195US for an HRA marked rod, when they had 'em.

I know they cost $$$. I figure I will need one someday and they aren't getting easier to find or cheaper, so now is better than later.

Ebay often lists parts from all around the world. Sights for example coming out of Italy. The sad explanation of where the M1 parts are, or why are there only receivers available in Canada? When the containers of Garands arrived in the 90s from Denmark, they completely flooded the market. When Canadians had all the guns they wanted, the dealers started stripping rifles for parts for export. For a while Shotgun News had ads for parts kits, everything except the receiver. The parts bags had parts from wartime USGI makers, and that suited the collector and reassembler markets just fine. The Italian receivers were useless because the border was closed to non US military guns. And this is why Canada has so many stripped Italian receivers.

GUNPARTSCORP has a $200 limit for Canada by the way "US law states $200 for Canada and $100 for every where else" most place think its $100 though.

Hey,

I am doing the same thing with a Breda receiver I got from Lever! I Just ordered a bunch of parts from Numrich Gun Parts in the US. You can get almost everything you need from there. I would recommend Boyds for the new stock to put on her though. it is a crap shoot with used military stocks where the fit may be something to be desired and they will have to be bedded or shimmed to fit nicely.

ht tp://www.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/Products.aspx?catid=11884

They have full Breda trigger groups in VG-EX condition for only $82.35. Order at least $100.00 at a time because of the shipping charges but stay south of $200.00 before shipping. I also ordered a (supposedly) new unissued gas cylinder for sale from bulgaria. The add says there are more than 10 available.

Remove the space between the ht tp: and you can use the links. Make sure the seller on Ebay says that they will ship to Canada. Even if it isn't listed, ask the seller that question. You will be supprised at how many will when the add says they won't!

There are some new replacement barrels on the EE right now. I am going to get one of the Kreiger replacements from riflebarrels.ca when they get them in this summer.

I figure it will cost about $1500.00+ or so to get it all put together at Vulcan and completely redone like it left the factory but with a sleeper barrel. I know I can buy one for less than that on the EE, but it is fun to build such an awesome rifle up from the ashes and have an incredible shooter that you won't feel bad about shooting the barrel out of it.

Hope you have as much fun looking and ordering all of the little parts as I am. Be sure to post your project when it is done! I am going to.

I obtained my Garand stock from Boyds - just wait for them to go on sale so you can meet $100 maximum for export to Canada. Boyds does this every so often. I purchased the correct bolt for '43 Springfield from the USA, trigger parts from Marstar (if still available) and someone recently obtained the rear sights from Italy - check the milsurp forum. I like the Krieger barrel option mentioned - I don't think finding a surplus barrel would be worth it if you plan on building a shooter.

Gas tube assemblies go for sale on the EE from time to time.

There's a Breda Garand on the EE right now for $750. Seems pretty reasonable.

Update,

The trigger group that I received from gun parts was absolutely mint. I don't think that it has ever been installed on an action before. Not one wear mark anywhere on it even on the top of the hammer where the bolt would ride. All parts are the same dark green parkerizing and covered with grease. I would recommend one if you need one! The gas cylinder was also mint, but because there are no markings on it whatsoever, I can't confirm that it is original or a newly manufactured one. It did come wrapped in what looks to be old original paper, but who knows. As long as it works as intended, I am not worried. All I need now is the stock and barrel and then it is off to Vulcan to be fitted and assembled.

GPC/Numrich is pricey, but they do export up to $200 worth of parts to Canada. They also tack on a $25 export surcharge. Sarco, the other big US source, limits exports to $100. Quality/condition seems a little more iffy with Sarco.
