I've been skulking around the MBR forum thinking about getting a Norc M14 and tuning it up (I have no gas guns whatsoever except the mandatory stable of ARs and non-shootable 12(3) FNs). All of Hungry's and 45ACPKING's posts had me thinking hard.

I wandered onto the TSE forum and what do I find there but what are effectively new Breda Garands chambered in 7.62X51. I called up Gadget and had him describe them to me.

On his recco I bought one. It is a stunner. It is in new condition with an unfired Breda barrel. The op-rod is marked 7.62 and is a SA. The trigger group is WRA. Other than that everything inlcuding the barrel is marked BMR.

It is certainly more expensive than tuning a Norc by adding new sights, op rod, barrel, bolt and tuning the gas system but not by very much. The only major draw back here is that there is really no option for optics that I know of that works well. A very minor plus is that it holds 8 rounds legally.

Here are some pics. I am going to shoot it today and will report back.

I bought one of those too! It's making its way through the mail to me as we speak! My first rifle purchase in years. It started something because I bought a Russian SKS today!

Do some careful measuring before you get all excited about your new Garand. Check to see how long the barrel is between the muzzle and the bolt face. The Italians converted a number of their 30-06 rifles to 7.62 the simplest way possible. They removed the barrels, whacked a half-inch off the breech end, cut a new chamber, dressed the newly exposed steel accordingly and reinstalled the barrel.

The other parts in front of the receiver ring were shorted 1/2" too. SARCO in the US was selling the stripped parts without troubling the buyers with any suggestion they wouldn't fit USGI-pattern rifles. You may have a rifle that cannot accept some Garand parts.

I have two M1's that have 308 barrels on them and they are fine shooters. I'm new on this forum but I have read about the Norc M14's that are cheaply priced. Not to offend any Norc people, but I have also read about some very serious problems with the Norcs as well, soft bolts, Kabooms etc. It would seem you get what you pay for. Sometimes less. I doubt very much you will have any problems at all with your Breda Garand.
As far as optics, there is a company called Armega Ranges, here in Yankland, that sells a forward mount for a 'Scout' scope. I have one on a 308 Garand and it does shoot well. The mounts are rugged and require no alterations or modifications to your M1. They use LER Pistol Scopes. I can look up their website if you would like.
Be sure to shoot your M1 with the irons first. You will be amazed at how accurate they are.
You did well.

I made up some 7.62x51 Springfield Garands using the SARCO parts and they "breeched" up perfectly. Used US Springfield receivers because the barrels were made by Springfield.Stocks and handguards were new NT and op rod italian 7.62x51. Have two BM59 barrels and op rods plus the wood for a future project. The BM 59 barrels are US made and cut down by the italians.
