Howdy Folks!

I have a shooter Garand that I love to hunt with. While hunting with it though, I came to the conclusion that the rear sight aperture seems too small for hunting purposes. It kind of makes me question how the average American infantryman could find anything in the sights that was moving or when the light started to die off.

Now I'm not sure if what I have is a NM sight or not, but I am thinking about drilling it out to larger diameter aperture so I can make it more useful to me for hunting.

Has anyone done this before? Or can a guy get different rear apertures and avoid drilling out a perfectly good target sight?

Thanks!

The standard aperture is .069. Match apertures are smaller measuring .0595 and .0520. The standard aperture was optimized for combat use and allows a pretty fair field of view which should suffice for hunting as well. That said, apertures are easily replaceable so a person could drill out the aperture to suit one's taste.

Largest 6 point Mule Deer I've taken to date fell to my M1 with standard GI rear sight. Our local club banned it from our "Hunting Rifle" event. Go figure ....

waaay back 15 years ago i considered same issue .................i bought a spare rear site apeture , and drilled it slightly larger .................( kept original parts just in case i sell it --NOT ) the larger apeture to me works like the battle site /large apeture on my no4 enfield ...............faster target aquasition, no better or worse accuracy . took a moose with it that fall 110m shot offhand .

bad news REAR SITE IS HARDENED METAL it was tough to drill out but was do able ...........so it worked for me.
