I finally broke down and bought a Lee reloading kit and loaded a few yesterday. My buddy who reloads had some Hodgson 4350 powder which we used with a 150 gr SP interlock Hornady bullets. I loaded about 20 with 55g of powder and about 40 with 58g of powder.

I plan on using them in a M1917 (P-17) Remington 30.06 but I also have a Garand M1. Would these loads be too hot for my Garand?

You need to use a faster rifle powder when reloading for the Garand. If the gas port pressure is too high because of using a slower powder, it slams the bolt against the rear of the receiver way too fast. Do that many times and the rear of the receiver gets cracked - very bad news.

Same reason why "heavy" projectile loadings are a no-no for the Garand.

150g projectiles and powders like IMR 4895, IMR 4064, W748, H4895, BLC2, H335 are preferred.

Some of the reloading manuals have Garand-specific reloading flagging for specific loads.

I guess I'll save the loads for the P-17. Maybe someone on here can recommend a good powder for my garand to go along with the 150 gr SP Interlock as I would like to make some hunting with the Garand in the Fall.

Thanks for the information :)

Any of the powders I listed would be a good powder for the Garand and 150g projectiles. There are others.
With all of the current reloading component availabiity craziness having a broad list helps when shopping.

In a "perfect availability" world I would pick H4895 or IMR4895.

Most of the *concepts* in this article also apply to reloading for the M1:

I have an article from American Rifleman from the 80's that is excellent and shows you which powders and bullets to use for the Garand. If anyone wants it just pm me with your email address and I can forward it to you. Personally my best powder/bullet combo for my garand's are IMR3031 and 150gn. FMJ bullets from Hornady, this combo will keep inside 2" at 100 yards from any of my Garand's.

I have a reprint of the same article in my library :) OP is using 150 SP since hunting is in the cards, but same principles apply.

if you like 4350 you should be using a adjustable gas fitting that is out there. otherwise u will damage your op rod which is set up for 4895 powder. The m1 garland should be loaded with imr or hog don 4895. research pressure curves. the m1a and m1 garland were developed for specific bullet weights and pressure curves and u need to be aware f these.

IMR4895 47.0 grains pushing a 150 grain is a good safe round for the Garand, and you can build up from that. The IMR4895 has the perfect pressure wave for the Garand.

Two rifles means two loads. Use IMR or H 4895, IMR4064, Varget and 150 to 180 grain bullets. 165's for hunting. The cartridge and rifle loves 165's and they'll kill any game in North America you care to hunt.
It's the Hornady book that has a whole chapter on M1 Rifle loads. Never seen any need for that myself though.
