Tomorrow is garbage pickup day in my area. I noticed that a house around the block had alot of stuff out at the curb for garbage. I walked over to see if anything was salvageable. Turns out there was a brown army looking canvas duffle bag filled with old army canvas & leather stuff. It was getting dark so I didn't start pulling everything out of the bag. When I got it home I took this out of the bag.

I noticed this diamond shaped mark near the end of the case.

I opened the flap & it has J.&A.H. 1942 stamped in ink, & initials that look like W.P.N. Would this be a wartime issue gun case for an Enfield? Anyone seen one like this before? I'm glad to have saved it from the landfill. Still have to look through the other stuff in the bag tomorrow.

Yes, it is a wartime issue cover for an Enfield rifle. I'm not sure how often these were used during the war but they are not a paratrooper or other special ops forces specific item. From what I understand they were intended as a general issue type of item but I believe they were only issued when deemed necessary such as when the rifle would be put into temporary storage (going on leave?). It's a nice item that has gone up in value just like all other WW2 items but it's not particularly rare so the value would be anywhere from $25 - $75 depending on condition and who is selling it.

Nice find by the way and I'm really curious to see what else was in the bag.
 
You picked up the canvas case but didn't look for the rifle? I call this The One That Got Away.
 
There's a good $100. if you can get the stains out. Get it dry cleaned. That might be a military marking too, the diamond I mean.
 
That may be someone cleaning gramps' stuff out. Might be worth knocking on the door to see if they have any old rifles to part with...;)
 
Forgive me for the hijack, but your thread seemed like as good a place as any to ask if the canvas backpack in the pics below may be of military origin? It looks like it to me, but who knows. Was just curious. :)

Still a nice find, but certainly not one approaching some of the values listed here. If it was Canadian marked it would be worth a bit more to Canadian collectors. These bags were issued in the Canadian Forces until stock ran out in the 80s, at which time a green nylon version was made which held the early C7 or the C7A1 without it's scope. There were also earlier versions in white dating from the 20s.

SFX: Your bag is one of the packs that went on the back of the 1937 pattern of webbing, it could be British or Canadian, one would have to examine the markings inside. Run of the mill condition would run from $10 to $25.

that looks like the large pack for the 1937 pattern british webbing- attached to the "wrong" straps etc-ther's a small pack as well, a canteen, bren gun pouches,etc- however, there are knockoffs around - walmart was selling the knockoff as a "fashion " pack a few years back when the kids were into bullet belts and all that "military" stuff- the way to tell was the heaviness of the canvas and if there was a made in china, tiawan/korea label sewn to the inside
 
Yes, it's the 'big pack'. Often seen here as a general purpose item, frequently with the pack straps fastened round it like that (because the Left & Right straps are useless for wearing without the rest of the set).
