garrett 45-70 cartridges

Logger..i don't believe they are being brought into Canada....they use heavy flat hard cast bullets at velocities well above the usual factory ammo. Ammo like this is very easy to reload, bullets similar are avail. from M.T. Chambers' Supply. There is a publication avail. called "Supreme Handloads for the 45/70" which shows/uses loads similar to the Garrett or beyond, the Author prefers heavy bullets at top speeds and pressure to 40K, which is the same pressure(approx.) of the .450 Marlin. It's a great read although all these loads are hard on the shoulder.

"...I think you can buy the bullets direct from Garret..." Components are on the U.S. 'restricted for export' list. The export permit is required. Garrett may not have the required U.S. exporter's licence either. Wouldn't hurt or cost to ask him though.

I just found out a buddy of my is driving to the safari show in Reno. So I will contact Garrett and see if they are attending.

Best bet is your friend going to Reno. It's the only way to get them here. Unless you reload? If Garretts is not attending the show go to one of the gun shops and they should carry them.

I just ordered 250 Beartooth 525gr WLNGC's yesterday for my Marlin 1895GS 45-70.

When they arrive I will load them to 1650fps using H322 powder... :)

Way cheaper than buying Garret rounds.

I have Beartooth ship to my PO Box in Blaine, Washington then I go down pick them up, declare them at the border, pay my taxes and go home with my legally imported booty... :)

I am shooting the 450 gr bullet barn bullets at +/- 1800 fps using RL 7. I will have to check my data to confirm the load. This is out a Marlin guide gun.

Cheers

I've gone as high as 48 gr. of RL7 in my 1895 (22" barrel) with the Bullet Barn 405 gr. and I think the velocity was around 1750. I suspected the chronograph was reading low as I expected somewhat higher than that. Recoil was a tad stout and I settled on 45 gr. Packs quite a wallop even at that. I doubt anything that got in the path of one of those would be likely to offer much criticism.
