Garrison Petawawa PR Match 1- 11/12 June 2016 - Debrief here!!

Excellent pics Black Jack and Rickster66 ..Thanks !
I had a great time and it was really nice to get together for another one of Barneys clinics. He has never failed to bring good training ...good attitude...good karma and lately crappy weather which made for good training conditions .
There were 7-8 people there that hadn't shot out to 600 meters before ...some had only shot out to 300m previously and it was good to see the smiles when they were getting hits from the deep end of the pool . I have lost count how many clinics I have attended/helped on now with Barney but I always come away from these happy and looking forward to the next one !!

Hope to see of you guys up here shooting again soon !

Finally have a chance to review the weekend.

i was initially kinda bummed that we lost the 600M range on Sunday but a little positive mental attitude and cooperation really turned things around.

i am thankfull that Barney has spent so much time and effort creating a community where we can all escape to. It's a fore gone conclusion that he is not doing this for the money but for the joy of sharing knowledge experience and questionable humor. With out his efforts in putting all this together my summers would no ware near as fun.

I am thankfull to Morgan and his klan. If it weren't for him running the club, coordinating with range control and putting together targets the events wouldn't come together. However I will never turn my back to you while on a moving platform EVER AGAIN.

I am thankfull for all the familiar group of guys that come out to multiple clinics. It's so nice to be able to hang out and talk about things that are not work related.

i am thankfull for the new faces that show up. Although I am by no means an expert I do enjoy trying to help out.

I am am thankfull for range control letting us play in their sand box. Let's all bear in mind that we very, very rarely get bumped off a range and that when we do it's not because they arbitrarily feel like messing with us.... it's because there are people who use fire arms for a living to ensure our quality of life that need the practice "a little more than we do".

i am most thankfull that by Sunday afternoon every one left with a smile on their face and a feeling of accomplishment. There were times on Saturday that due to the increased pace of the match things got a little hectic but as long as you persevere success is all but assured. I actually had blast on Sunday. Different shooting positions, platforms, steel targets, moving targets. Not going to find any of that at any of the local ranges.

Thanks to our photography crew for all the awesome pictures.

Remember, when you think that God is s***ing on your head it's just fertilizer for future growth.

Thanks to everyone, see you all soon.

Dr. Mo, I have stolen your hat. You will have to come out to another clinic to reclaim it!

Okay, I got around to coercing my laptop in to cooperating with us tonight and the stats are posted up on post #2 (on page 1).

Now I have to post pictures of the awesome prizes... stuff that you can use versus stuff that gathers dust and has to be moved or tossed someday! :)

What else are you grateful for?

Cheers

Barney

PS: I got all my Resistive- Capacitive Circuits (both series and parallel) homework calculations done in 5 hours today! All great fun!

Big thanks to all involved, Barney, Morgan, Heather, Rickster and BlackJack for the photos, theDuck for helping me get on target, and everyone who made the effort to come out, it was a great time.

Grateful that this was my first exposure to PR and PRS, it was a blast and I will be at PR2 in July.

Grateful for the rain, and for the distances we had to carry our gear, I learned equipment selection the hard way (the best way).

Grateful to all of you, the community that makes this work so well.

I'd like to start of by thanking Barney for his excellent and enjoyable instruction.
Morgan for his being an excellent host and providing all the props and targets for Sunday and his wife Heather for sentry duty.

At first I was disappointed at losing Bravo range for Sunday but it gave us the opportunity to practice PRS style shooting with some great props.
It was also fun shooting steel gongs at 100Y using 22LR.
Although I had some equipment issues on Saturday I still enjoyed my day and I got great pleasure in seeing some new shooters shine who had never shot at those distances.
I was very impressed seeing Dr Mo shoot 39 points at 600M with only 8 shots due to time constraints.

I know there are some people who did not stick around for Sunday and it has been said before but when you are handed lemons make lemonaid.

Holy crap. Considering I've never shot further than 200Y before, I'm pretty impressed with myself that I placed 4th (individually). :)

Looks like the $20 I spent on Strelok Pro was worth it ;)

It was a great event all the way around. For me more of a test, to show up with my M14, the same way I'd use it for anything else, and see how I did. And I was shocked at how well I was able to do with a $300 scope, running a semi-auto and surplus ball ammo.

My takeaways/giveaways:
This is in fact a martial art. And with that comes a lot of things.
There are limits to what you can do with a system, but they're a lot further out than most people think they are. (Rickster66 was kicking ass at 600 meters, using an AR propped up on the magazine.)
Mental management is a far more important aspect than people think. (As Mike Tyson says "Everybody has a plan, until they get punched in the face." the ability to recover from a mishap, "tap-rack-bang" and carry on without getting flustered is critical.
Driving a semi is a really big help in the rapid follow up event, but trying to make a habit of double tapping the 3 second exposures at 300 leads to rushed shots. It's ill advised at the skill level that I am at now. (I reserve the right to attempt this again later.)
Scopes with a hard stop or a "micrometer style indicator" I'll call it, are definitely worth a little extra. It's easier than you would think to end up out by a full revolution (or 2)
This is a martial art, be proficient at your battery of arms. Getting mags in and out fast without coming off the scope during the agony snap sessions is an important factor.
Lesson from day 2: like I said in the M14 clinic. Know your reticle, know your drop. When you flip that scope on it's side, where's your point of impact going to be? if you've got a good idea of what your reticle is, what your relative bore alignment is, and you should have a pretty good idea where your aiming point needs to be to produce a hit.

MAD respect for Rickster66, to show up and shoot an AR off the magazine and pull that kind of a score is unbelievable. You're my hero dude.

What am I thankful for you ask? Well I feel compelled to say Jesus, followed by bacon and then firearms. But all joking aside let's start with a big thanks as everyone has mentioned to Barney, Morgan and Heather for getting the show off the ground and running. For a guy who only had 14 rounds through his rifle coming out and didn't know his dope or other finer points to PR I'm pretty ecstatic to have chalked up some points! Big thank you to my partner swifto for putting up with my questions and bumbling. Hell he got us ahead of BiG Ken which made our 7 hrs drive home a tit for tat as I poked fun of his 5 days of clinic ahead of me. Made for a quick feeling drive as we debated with passion.

I do have some regrets from the weekend. One being is not planning properly for the weather. I didn't pack 90% of what I needed for the weather as the weatherman jerked around the entire week leading up. I planned for the 40% rain and 20 degrees.......f that guy and his horse he rode in on. So that's why you did not see us gents on Sunday. It wasn't the company, it was no dry or warm boots/clothing. A lesson that I won't make again.
I am looking forward to an instructional day on the next go around ....maybe in October if I can create a sense or urgency with the head of financial and social affairs. You should have seen her face when she looked in the back of the truck and seen the banana holder.....priceless!!!!lol
All in all I went from virtually zero experience to soaking up what I could on rifle set ups, spotting scopes and hell even proper stands that has now consumed my evenings researching and learning.

In the end it's always a great time to get out and shoot and look forward to the next time!

Jp

Got to work on a little sight picture practice today while watching the US Open with the tactical banana.

Thanks for the excellent training aid Barney! (the mods I've made are patent pending...)
