Garrison Petawawa PR2 Match - 17/18 Jun 2017 - Debrief here!

Rick and I are in. E-transfer sent.
Question!! Forgive my naivety please, I'm a newby.
I'm shopping for a scope. Do I want the reticle on the second focal plane of the lens? I'm also pretty sure I'm going blind in my old age so I need a fairly high magnification.
Thoughts?
Thanks!
Chantal

Looking forward to shooting with you guys again. ChalkRiver2 I hope to once again come to a complete stop in the round-about to make you laugh. I would still be going around in that thing if you hadn't led me off the base. :runaway:

I prefer first focal plane as it is the most versatile when shooting field courses where you need to range targets, measure things, and spot corrections since the reticle remains calibrated at any zoom length. One trade off is that the reticle will increase or decrease in size as you zoom in and out.

Second seems to be more suited to fixed distance shooting where you know the target sizes and can rely on one focal length.

That's my 2 cents on it based on my needs. I shoot with the h59 reticle which is all about meausring and hold overs, so ffp is a must.

Thanks Chris. I'm going to run into Cabelas tomorrow and "scope" a few out. (aarrggg sorry). Appreciate the feedback.

SORRY EVERYONE ....We received some bad news recently as range control changed what type of info they want for us to get the calibre changes completed .
We were told once the Base Commander signed off on it we were good to go but now that is not the case. So we have to go back to using the previous list OF APPROVED CALIBRES until this is approved ...... AGAIN.
Sorry about this and we hope to get the calibre restrictions shorted out soon.

For those of us who are new, please list the currently approved calibres.

Thanks.

They can't even predict weather 12 hour in advance. Recently they twice called for thunderstorms and heavy rains and it was sunny...

However, any tips on what to bring if it rains. garbage bags?

Barney will go into more detail im sure...but goretex or any sort of rain gear is better than none.

That said...be prepared to get wet...your gun, gear, ammo, scopes, bags, mats, EVERYTHING GETS WET!, and that's part of the point of these clinics is to find out what works/what doesn't, and what quality equipment means vs cheap dollar store stuff. Youll be moving a fair bit, so keeping things as dry as possible while remaining mobile is key.

If you rely on an app to get your ballistic data...have an analog backup.

I can give you a list of all the high-dollar gear that will make you the envy of the range when everyone is soaked and shivering...but half the fun is learning from mistakes and deciding what gear YOU want to invest in! (and even THAT GUY will be secretly cold and wet)...

Look forward to seeing ya out there!

Barney........I have a question (about the clinic). Will there be any running or jogging (like some SR matches)? I ask because my injured knee isn't healed right yet and my usual robust gait has been slowed :)

........and a big thank you for all you do, year after year, in putting these on!

There is no running at all but you may be walking from the 100 ,200 etc back to the 500 a few times though . We are on Charlie range this time and it only goes back to 500 meters.

Wet weather gear mistakes I've made:
-Running shoes (even when no rain, wet grass = wet feet)
-Plastic poncho (cumbersome and gets in the way)
-Nylon windbreaker (not a rain coat)
-cotton clothes (stay wet longer)
-ammo in cardboard boxes (soggy and fall apart)

Wet weather gear that worked:
-Goretex rain pants and "shell" jacket
-synthetic clothes (dry faster)
-Good hiking boots
-50 round plastic ammo case
-a couple of small clean towels

So pretty much common sense for being outdoors, also, you'll be indoors about half the time, in the butts or in the "classroom".
also if its cold and wet there will be a nice warm fire in the classroom.

Look on the bright side, I remember a clinic a couple years ago where it snowed and rained. Wet can be be annoying. Soaked and cold is a new level of misery! Looks like the water works will be in the evening of Saturday. With any luck we can watch it rain from Dany's.

.... I shoot better in the rain... I shoot better in the rain....that's what I keep telling myself, looking forward
