Just wondering how necessary this tool is. Watched a few videos so far on the gas system. Some guys use it some don't. I'm guessing it would help keep things aligned when removing the plug. I was also wondering about the gas piston itself. With the plug in, should it move freely or should there be some suction on it when moving it by hand with the action open?

Yep. a bit of suction there is a good thing with the plug in.
Whip the plug out and that sucker should slide freely.
Don't use the tool myself. If your gas lock moves when you take the plug out your plug is on far too tight or your gas lock is not on tight enough.
The soft end of a hammer works for tightening the gas lock from 4 o'clock to 6 o'clock.
A man could spend as much on tools and accessories as he did for he gun.
Just my ever so humble opinion.

Easy enough to make the tool out of a chunk of aluminum or a thick plastic cutting board I would imagine. I use a big screw driver between the barrel and the piston cylinder occasionally if things aren't coming off easily. Works well for me, nothing has been on so tight that its caused any marks or anything thus far.

I have the Sadlak tool - very nice - use it when I remember which isn't often. Now on the M14 site in the US ( and they have some real knowledgeable they I folks on there ) they insist it is a necessary tool to use.

I used to believe anybody who bought this tool was a foolish shooter until.... At the BC Interior Clinic we were doing some CQB drills and I grabbed a gas cylinder that was hot so my other hand could tighten up the gas plug with the combo tool.

And now the modified prone with the M14:

Bad mistake! :nest:

Now I have a Sadlak Gas cylinder wrench just for these purposes! I'm a lot wiser now.

Cheers and keep helping them nooobs around here.
