I am wondering which gas checks I should use. I cast my own bullets for my .303 Brit and want to ramp up the speed(not using GC's right now). My inquiry is this....Would I be able, read better off, to use a .323 GC or should I go with a .308?? I size my bullets to .313 and was thinking that the .323's would at least "fill out" the bottoms of the rounds. Any input would be appreciated, btw, where would a fella be able to purchase some?

.308 gas checks are what you want, if you try .323 they will be extremely loose fitting and when you size them you won't be able to center them properly leading to a very inaccurate bullet.

WSS has them last time I checked.

All the bullets that I cast for .303 Brit are 30 cal gas checks, they couldn't be .323 GC's they would never hold on to anything, and if by some miracle you could get them to stay on the bottom of the bullet, you could never load it into the brass. I don't know the stores in Calgary, I know there is a Wholesale Sports and they might have them but in Edmonton P&D for sure has them.

I don't believe P&D will have them, when i called them the last time they didn't know what they were.....When I'm stuck for this stuff, the only place in Canada that I can rely on for stock seems to be Epps!!!

Ben: doesn't surprise me at all, most people there have no clue as far as casting goes. When you walk in the door, second shelf far north end(where the offices are) on the east side of the shelf near the bottom. They had some a week ago but they might have sold out. Actually the only guy (Blair) in Edmonton who know what you are talking about is at Lock and Load, problem is they don't stuck much there as far as components go.

hornady has them

for info
but you can't get them over the border with out a pernit (i think)

not shure on the 303 if you use the 308 or another size (no experience on 303)
but i did measure the diameter of some rcbs 30cal gc (hornady look the same)
5 pcs RCBS 308 measured .320 to .321
you could go in to the local place or phone/ send email to a store asking about the part # you need

you might also need to get one that matches up to your mold

Nothing makes sense anymore as far at the laws go.

Yes, you use 308 gas checks on your bullets for 303 British.

What I can't get over is that the going price is $38.00 per 1000....plus tax....plus shipping !!!! Horndy is doing pretty well for selling a box of stamped cups worth maybe $3.00

The die set to punch out your own that's sold out of the U.S. is $398 USD. I think when I get a chance I'll pick up some old worn out punch press dies and make up a set of punches to do my own. Maybe I'll sell them for half of list price just to pi## off Horndy.
:D

Um, I need to tell you a secret, you can pick up a punch kit on ebay for about $45.00USD shipped. Search for Freechex and you will find it, also type in the same word on youtube for the 20 second demo of how the tool is used.

I bought mine last fall and it works great. I have an endless supply of 10 thou copper sheeting but you can also use thicker aluminum pop/beer cans, anyways it takes about 15-20 seconds to make a gas check with the tool so it isn't that hard to do.

Gas checks are okay to bring/ship up from the states, I get 10k or so at a time, making my own would take too much time. It does add about .05 to the cost of cast bullets, but necessary for alot of bullet applications.
