Gas Length/Build clarification

I'm looking for clarification on gas length systems for my current build. Originally I had settled on a Carbine length system and had purchased a CAR Spring, Spikes T2 Buffer, 9" FF Rail & a Low-Pro GB.

As we all know plans change in mid-build & I'm starting to think a mid-length barrel (14.5) with a FSB instead. I really don't want to have to sell/buy a shorter 7" Rail, as I don't like the exposed length showing after the Rail like the standard issue M4s'.

So here are my questions.

1 - Can I run the CAR Spring/Spikes T2 Buffer w/the 14.5" mid-length barrel by just adding a middy gas tube & FSB?
2 - Or could I run the CAR system (LP GB under Rail) I already have and put a non-functional FSB in front of the Rail & use a 14.5" CAR Barrel?

TIA

Your question is hard to read but I'll try my best to answer you

1-Buffer spring should be good for any length barrel or gas block, unless you plan on full auto firing "which your not" so dont worry to much about buffer weight.

2-yes you can put a front sight infront of the LP gas block "if you can make it fit"

You are confusing two separate things. The carbine stock and associated buffer spring have no bearing on the length of the gas system used. You could use a carbine stock and spring with a rifle length barrel and gas tube.

The gas system length is meaningful to the barrel length. A 14" barrel needs to use a carbine length gas system. If you want to use. Midlength gas system you will need to go to at least a 16" barrel.

This is incorrect, They do make 14.5" barrels with Midlength Gas Systems

He is right to a certain degree. But you're also right, in that there is an exception to every rule. The majority of mid length gas systems are found on barrels 16"-20"

To the OP. With AR's you can really do just about anything that you can dream up. Settle on a style that you want and buy the right parts for the build. If that means that you have to spend a little more money, so be it. The end product will be worth it in the long run.

Thanks for the replies, through here & PMs' I got the info I needed. Now..where to find a mid-length Govt or M4 profile barrel??

BCM makes a 14.5 with a mid-length gas tube, Travis Haley claims that it helps shoot a flatter trajectory to help with accuracy at longer distances.

That being said, wouldn't you want a 9" rail for that? Or did I really misread the question?

Also I think if you have a focused build, then your plans shouldn't change so drastically. I found that if you write it down and have a target goal in mind, then the tendencies to alter the plans decrease.

I've always had a 9" Rail in the build plan, originally I wanted to go LP GB & a CAR length gas system so I started setting up for that. But something caught my eye & now was just wondering if I could run that and just put a FSB on as well

Daniel Defense also make 14.5 mid barrels

Both DD & BCM make middy's, the BCM is highly regarded on their 14.5" middy from what I've heard. Until either of these or the S&J Mids become avail through site sponsors more readily I'm kinda in limbo..
