Gas ports on an 1100/1187

If I recall correctly the gas ports are drilled at an angle (gas ports are made "after" the lug is attached to the barrel to ensure proper alignment.) So yes, a gunsmith should be able to enlarge if required.

Check out the Mossberg 930 though, this in my mind would be a much nicer 14" semi-auto.

I chopped down a remington model 58 barrel from 30" to about 19 last year.
(58 is gas piston semi)
i found an online chart that showed the port sizes for a 24" barrel so i started with that size.
using a numbered drill bit index, i would drill the two ports out one step larger, reassemble, test fire, redrilling larger until it would cycle 1 1/8oz target loads reliably. I then went one size bigger for good measure, and for when things get dirty and gummed up.
it works great now with the exception of when firing light loads with a loose grip and not against your shoulder (ie from the hip). it seems to need a shouldet to help it cycle. however i noticed that it does that with my 28" barrel too.

the gas system on the 58 is manually regulated, it has a gas cap that rotates from light to heavy loads (small and large bleed holes). so it still happily cycles light and heavy loads

im unfamiliar with the 1100, is it a self regulating gas system? that may complicate things
