I was poking around today and came across a open gate. This is certainly not the first time this has happened. Seems like just about every road I travel in the bush has them, two today. It got me to thinking about a bad experience one time when I got locked in. How can you tell if it's safe to go on past. There must be some sort of protocol. Seems like it could create a life threatening situation. What do you think ???

Is there any signage?

Maybe a good idea to carry a master key in case you get locked in.;)

If it's a gated road, wouldn't that be private property? And if so, you shouldn't be driving down it anyways?

I don't know, that's what I would assume.

Not necessarily private property. There may still be reason to get permission [fenced grazing lease, etc] But here in BC there are many gates that are not on private property. If the cattle are off the land, it is OK to hunt this public land without consulting the leaseholder. However, gates should be left as found. In the case of an open gate with a lock present, there is always a chance of being locked in, so it would be at your risk to enter such an area. Most of the gates in our area have no locks, so not an issue. Regards, Eagleye

Not in the fraser valley. Lots of gated spur roads. Lots of vandalism to logging equipment occurs in the Fraser Valley, so before a new block is started and the haul road is built the first thing to appear is the standard issue metal gate. After the logging is completed the gate simply stays. These are crazy tough! don't ask how I know!

A good buddy of mine kept harrasing the Mission district office and they finally gave him a master key to all the forestry gates in the area. They took all his personal info and he had to return the key and re-apply the next year. He said he was a professional photographer.
We had many an awesome weekend in the mountains around Stave, mount Crickmer and Mcnutt were all ours! You can bet we closed the gates behind us!
Got to Go,if you're talking about an open gate in the Chilliwack valley or Harrison FSR then I think you made a good call by not going up. It would be a long walk out if you came down to find it locked!

Reported to work pretty well on Photo Radar boxes over in Jolly Olde, as well.

Really, if you fear being stuck inside, either carry something similar, stay out, or find out who controls access, and make friends.

I've heard of, but not seen myself, one gate in this area that has been reportedly left in a tidy stack of two foot long sections. Probably not a way to make friends and influence people, if ya know what I mean.

Stuck on the inside? Zip a link of the chain or the hasp and tweak it out of the way, then reassemble afterwards. Coupla jumper cables and some welding rod, and you could actually repair the cuts.

Better to not be stuck inside.

I was going up to the old Carolin mine off the Coquihalla. It has been abandoned for a while now. There is no signage. I'm sure the road was built for the mine so they do have the rights to the road. It's most likely left open for fire season etc. It would be nice if they would lock the gate open if they aren't using the area. Anyone could come along and put a lock on it. There maybe a way in from Boston Bar, beautiful country up there.

Around here most of the gates are either to active logging (which is supposed to have a sign), someone's property (which might not have a sign), grazing leases, crop leases (huge hay fields), etc.

Simply put leave a gate as you find it. If there's a lock on it but the gate is open look at the condition of the lock. Does it look somewhat in decent shape? Means its probably being used. Easiest bet is to stay out until you find out why that gate is there and who has the keys.

Really not sure how to take this locked/unlocked gate issue. If you come upon an unlocked gate and there is no signage, well it should just stay open. If it states private property and you indulge and return to a locked gate........well I suppose you have a problem. I regard this as a provincal camp ground. The rules or signs at the gate state gates locked after such and such a time and open in a.m at such a time. Real easy to follow. I would think that an open gate should remain that way unless posted otherwise. I wouldn't dare explain what I would do if I was to become locked in an unmarked gate that was previously open. Fair is only fair. Now let's discuss deactivated roads. How is that fair. Anyone rondeveau into Dardenelle Lake lately........from the east end? Seems someone has gone out of their way to deactivate the road. Deactivate is one thing, but to dig a moat (s) across the road is another. When the bastards start digging up road culverts, this is beyond deactivating. Whom does one show their disregard to? Dardenelle Lake is east of Stump Lake..well north end of Stump Lake and directly east. Pass under the power line and continue on. Seems hardly fair for the crowd on the east side of this lake to have to venture up/down and around. I'm refering to coming in from the Monte Lake side. Is there a secret passage?
Suppose eye've ranted enough.
Regards.

I let the leaseholder know that I tie a piece of flagging tape to the lock when I need out that way! He doesn't want a phone call that he has to come over and let me out either.
