Gauging interest in 2 day rifle course.

Now that this thread is utterly hijacked:

Skills and drills is open to all and that is great. Entry level training for the masses, come one come all, no problem. I learned a lot from attending those and I never have had problem with safety there ever. (Good Job Rob)

Now if we are talking about movement forward of the line, hot ranges and generally higher speed courses/range days, I expect that there is some sort of vetting process, formal or not. For safety and for general character.

So, if JL, RS, MK, RK or "BCR" RS vouch for someone locally, I figure/hope we are g2g.

Nepotism? Damn straight.

There are allegedly two full patch members at my range and I want nothing to do, from close or far, with organized/disorganized crime. Convicted or not.

This thread has indeed been hijacked, but I believe the conversation has been long overdue...if this type of training is to continue in Canada I think we need to do a better job of figuring out who is on the line...for those that don't agree, POCO Range # 7 and a day card are there for the asking. MHO.

I see this thread went sideways but...

I'd be very interested in this type of training in Manitoba. I would be willing to provide professional references to validate who I am and what my intentions are - I don't think that would be a bad idea at all. In fact I could also provide a professional reference for some of the Manitoba Gunnutz that I have shot with.

So you're saying that James Yeager and Tactical Response are a bunch of amateurs? Don't be a douche.

I have my own opinions of James Yeager and his methods, but they are not relevant to this topic.

As for the training opportunity presented here, once the pertinent info is made availible it may be something to look into.So count me a definite maybe depending on work schedule.

One instructor we're considering was a Royal Marine, fought in the Falklands worked in Iraq for 3 years etc etc. Others are equally qualified.
The royal commando in question runs my offices in brazil. He is in the process of putting his thoughts on paper as to what he could potentially cover. If there is interest we can also put classes on in Ontario.

Good luck doing this in Ontario without the approval of the CFO (OPP), I am always open to attending classes and from experience have found that even when being on the range with people who have high skill levels, things are not always that black and white. I have been a member of IALEFI & NTOA for 15 years plus, and have attended my share of courses, and speak from experience when I say that what we would consider to be safe range etiquette, is not always interpreted the same by others.

And there is strike 2. Either you are interested or not. I am fartsack bound, if this keeps going, to the bin it goes in the am.

Discounting all the "Garbage Speak", I'd be interested in a rifle course depending on dates, and of course cost. Locations in Ontario would likely make this more "Doable" fro me.

Kevin has made all the valid points that need to be made here regarding vetting. The goal isn't to offer GI Joe fantasy camp style training, its to offer real useful skills to people who are serious and want to learn. Those who aren't serious about coming are the only ones who are whining about the requirements.

Here is my concept of progression.

Beginner. We would offer very low level training for people who just want to learn how to properly handle and fire their rifle/pistol and some very simple target acquisition drills. Now most shooters are gonna say "This doesn't apply to me." But most often it does. Most people even if they have been shooting for 10 years have some simple bad habbits that can be corrected in a couple days on instruction. Once those habbits are taken care of, more advanced training can begin.

Advanced. This would be where people who have taken the basic course can start to learn movement skills etc. People who have basic military/LEO training could jump in at this point.

So for those of you who know something about what we're talking about, would you care to throw out come basic content suggestions?

FYI - Every single class that I have taken outside of a work setting has required me to submit documentation that qualifies me to the course -- at least for the firts class with that instructor. I know several instructors that do not do that, and I think they are making a mistake.

Larry Vickers requires it
Pat Roger's same
Kyle Lamb
Paul Howe
Frank Garcia
Jerry Barnhart

Even it is word of mouth from a someone they know that vouches for you. Then once you've shot with them, they will let you come back, and if your back again and again and again, then you may enter their circle of trust, where you can recommend and vet people for them.

Agreed.

Add InSights and Thunder Ranch to that list too.

From the latest Gunsite course application FYI:

PLEASE CHECK ONE AND PROVIDE THE INFORMATION REQUESTED

I have enclosed a copy of my current driver's license and either a copy of my CCW permit or a statement of no criminal history from a local law
enforcement agency.

I have enclosed a copy of my current active service with either a law enforcement agency or United States Armed Forces.

I have attended a Gunsite class and provided credentials within the last two years.

I am attending an initial AZ CCW class and a copy of my current AZ driver's license is enclosed.

So wouldn't a PAL be the equivalent of what Gunsite is requesting? Driver's License + criminal record check...a PAL is a more thorough examination than that.

In short, no.

You might have got your PAL three years ago...and in the interim received criminal conviction. The option exits to revoke it immediately, or not renew when it comes up to expiry. Depends on the nature of the offence. Something more current is needed.

Get over it judge, unless you have access to verify every piece of id right on the spot and up to the minute then what you have stated above would never make any id or letter of reference legit up to the minute.

So I get a letter of reference today and show it to you next week, would it still be valid enough for you?? Its 2 weeks old now, I could have jaywalked in the interm :runaway:

They don't require up-to-the-minute credentials...just based on what is in the posted information they will take data from two years ago.

Also, depending on the state, you might have a CCW permit that is only renewed every few years...you could well have been charged in the intervening time but still have the ability to send in what appears to be a valid CCW permit.

So in short, yes.
