I put up a portable yesterday morning out of desperation , as Ive made one bad mistake after another this season . 1st day i gave my new stand to my dad , because id found a fresh scrape line somwhere else ,my dad shot the the 8 point id been scouting there the 1 st evening very happy for him . but Iv been on that scrape line 3 days without any luck . Yesterday i put up a portable overlooking a medow full of brambles & brush a nice 6 point came out but as i tried to shoulder my rifle he jumped into the woods . I grunted a couple times & he came back out , crawling on his belly I had about a 5 foot window at 100 yrd i missjudged though about 150 & aimed at the top of his back . Useing my 44 mag sighted dead at 100 yrd . Anyway found a bit of hair not much , no blood no tissue, still didnt sleep very well last night worried that mabey id wounded him . so i went back with my dog this morning searched for about 2 hours came up with nothing should i bother sitting there agian or move further down or up that trail ? Sorry i wrote so much for such a short question . Jason

Few posters on a hunting forum will report on anything but their "bang-flop" kills. The sad reality is that every year, a lot of game... everything from birds to ungulates and bears, is wounded and not recovered. So, first of all, while none of us like it when that happens, it's refreshing to hear from someone who doesn't deny that it does. As to you question about moving or staying, I would say that if your stand affords you reasonable visibility, and there is plenty of evidence of game in the immediate area, you might as well stay put. One shot in the woods is a very miniscule, time limited event, and it is highly unlikely that such a small single event would either drive the game out of the area, or result in a major alteration of game movement patterns within that area....just my opinion though.

Thanks for the reply icedog . To be more specific what i was wondering was if that particular deer would be back in the immediate future ? there is no doubt in my mind that i just trimmed a little hair off him and nothing more. Will he be exteremly suspicious of this area now , or will he be back ? They seem to be in full rut right now. & im exremely tempted to try some doe in estreus urine to lure him back if he'l show himself ?

Saw a black bear bolt for the bush one afternoon this spring after a clear miss by my hunting partner. We left, returned later in the day and found him back in the same field. We were able to stalk a fair bit closer this time, and I managed to "bang-flop" him. Not saying that deer aren't more wary than bears, but then again, being in rut tends to occupy their minds on "other" things, sometimes resulting in fatal judgement errors.

First off count the whole season as a success for putting your dad onto a nice buck!

I 'd bet that even with the gun shot, dog scent etc, that 6pter will be still be a rut drunk sucker. I bet you get that same deer if you put in a bit more time and some eustrus scent.

Good luck

Pretty sure your right Icedog he was back this evening I tried grunting again . Came to the treeline but wouldnt come out in the open . & thanks Dave your right it has been a sucess so far besides were only 4 days in . Definatley gonna get some eustrus sent towmorro & try that .:D
