Tried ordering the Gear Sector handstop from Brownells last week, the total order was under $100 (including the $5 shipping, still would have come to $95ish), and that piece got canceled...

The order read: Due to DDTC restrictions your item has been canceled...

Any ideas?

I've gotten that before. Some stuff is restricted for export regardless of the price. Those items are either deemed sensitve military hardware or the manufacturere hasn't jumped through all the hoops to export their goods yet.

The rest of the order came through, but just that tiny little handstop was canceled. I've ordered lots of restricted things in the past, but looks like Gear Sector stuff isn't available for export. Bah. Any sponsors have these things in stock? I'll call Target Sports when I get to work later this morning...

Yeah just called. Import license needed and all that. Doesn't seem too hard. I'm just gonna see if I can get it from Canada here.

There's a sticky in the legalese that has a list of all the brandnames that can be exported to canada through brownells.

ITAR is like Mino's maze, first of all each manufacturer that wish to export their product have to pay a yearly licensing fee of couple of thousands of dollars, so unless they can see enough export sales, most smaller company don't bother with it. than some products are not on the ITAR control list, so they can be exported without a permit.

Endusers or foreign resellers can have access to ITAR controlled products by applying for an export license on a individual basis, which shifts the associated cost off the manufacturer and onto the buyer, it's not that hard to do but just a bit tedious.

And then to add to the confusion, some manufacturers will not allow Brownells to ship out of the US due to distribution agreements. Brownells won't ship Bulter Creek flip up scope covers because Butler Creek's manufacturer already has their distribution contracts with someone else to distribute in Canada.

Yes. Due to DDTC restrictions the part you ordered cannot be legally exported. It's kinda right there when you read their message.

Sorry, I've seen ITAR restrictions, but I have no idea what DDTC restrictions are. Also didn't know that there were some items under $100 that aren't exportable. My understanding was that anything under $100 dollars unless it's a barrel was exportable.

It is also just a handstop - there really is no reason why this isn't exportable from Brownells - seeing as I have found 2 other american retailers who'll ship one up to me because no one in Canada has one of these in stock. I've also ordered other Gear Sector items in the past from other American retailers without any problems.
