Ok well last year i chipped a tooth when biting on steel shot and for several years i have been finding the odd pellet in my cooked duck and goose meat.
I was trying to find a method to know if there is steel shot in the meat without having to cut it up into small pieces and burrowing though it.
This year I caved in and invested in a small handheld metal detector.
It cost me about $60 but at least now i won’t have to go digging in the meat and tear it apart looking for shot and i don’t have any fear of running the meat through the grinder without the worry of breaking it(don’t ask me how i know that one).
This is the model i got:

i called them up and i explained what im looking for.
At first it took the guy a moment to understand my needs but once he understood the reasoning he was very helpful in selecting the model that would work for the job.
I will test it with a small pellet under some chicken breast or something once the unit arrives, just to make sure.
Just thought i would post this information if it would be any use for other people that were in the same boat.
Can’t wait for goose opener

That's a great idea.

I breast out ducks and geese, and take the legs. I can usually find every single pellet by following the holes, but once in a blue moon one slips through.

Well i just got the detector in the mail.
It’s a bit finicky since the sensitivity level is adjustable.
It can be set to ignore small items or it can be set all the way to make it beep even though its obviously not pointed at any alloy.
Took me a few minutes to get it to adjust to the sensitivity of a # 2 steel pellet under some frozen steaks
As a surprise i noticed that it also detects lead, i tried to see if it would respond to an air gun lead pellet and surprisingly it did.
Less awkward visits to the dentist with chipped teeth i hope this year.
