Geese and Duck,non toxic shot only?

I plan to try hunting both this fall but the regulations seem unclear.Do I need to use non toxic shot exclusively in southern Ontario ?

Read the regulations published by the authorities in that jurisdiction. I think badgreenbird is correct about a federal regulation applying to all of the country, but a Province can impose additional specifications and/or restrictions of its own.

Non toxic in all Canada . Most common is steel , but it is not a good killer . Wounds good though !!!
I use Kent Tungsten matrix . YES ,,,,, expensive , but kills good or better than lead.
There are also other options of non toxic as well . All expensive , but kill good. ,,,,,,,Frank

OP - for hunting anywhere in Ontario, look at it this way ......

Use non-tox ammo only:
- Geese/Ducks
- Dove (Note: The use of non-tox is specific to hunting doves in ON. Regs in other Provinces may vary - example: BC).

Option to use both lead and/or non-tox ammo:
- Woodcock (also a migratory species, however, lead shot may be used)

Thanks gents.I'm limited to 2.75" shells so thinking of trying some Kent Fasteel BB shot along with a choke like a Carlson extended range.Maybe this combo will have enough punch out to 35-40yds?

That will do it. I use fasteel 2.75" bb and 2 shot with a kicks choke and lethal at 40 yards.

It should also be noted if you are going to hunt waterfowl I would put some time in at your local skeet/trap club. Most crippler shots IMO are from guys that can't tell their range, dont pattern and don't practice.

2 3/4" Black Cloud #3s at 1500fps are really, really deadly on ducks. A little small for geese.

The Kicks chokes look good.I plan a road trip to Bass Pro soon so will likely pick one up.I will pattern it with the fasteel's and see what I get.

If you already have a mod choke i'd pattern some steel 2's and 3's before you buy a new choke. BB's may not be enough pellets in a 2 3/4" load. 3's will work over decoys and 2's out to 40 yds if you have a good pattern and can judge 40 yds

Mod not full?My rem full choke will handle steel shot.Are 2's enough for geese as they will be my primary targets?

I'd be inclined to keep your shots under 30 with that load. Yes they CAN kill farther, but I'd rather watch a few birds fly away unharmed than watch em fly away wounded. With steel, speed is everything. 2 3/4 shells offer smaller shot payloads so maximizing pellet count is important. Limiting range is the best way to do that. I won't shoot shells less than 1500 fps. More is better.
