Tempted on acquiring one. Is it improved in anyway from the previous besides the upper rail?
Reliable? Thoughts?

Yes the feeding is improved, infact flawless.
Top rail is nice and low, make sure to degrease and locktite it secure after you settle on the side of the charging handle.
Rail is made 1mm wider than standard 1913 rail, may fit tight on certain optics.
Side charging handle works well, but sits very close to top rail, make sure you test clearance with optic mounts or you will curse.
Mag well is still tight, back ridge needs fine sanding to feed Pmags.
Pmags are not the best choice as there are no over insertion stop. Make sure you insert and pull on an open bolt.
Recommend STANAG mags, they are alot smoother in and out. Drops free after lotsa insertions.
Rear cheek top cover fits a bit loose, DIY by adding material to fit tight if needed.
Ambi mag release, FINALLY,
 
I bought one of the carry handle style rifles last month, have run 200 flawless rounds through it. Out of the box, no lube, 10 round LAR mags and zero issues. Fast rifle to get on target and accurate with iron sights. Ergo's not ideal but can train for that. Just ordered the flat top upper and will pick up the lower set up in a couple months. This rifle is more reliable than some $2500+ rifles I've owned. I'm thinking about picking up another.

The FTU and LHG will improve the Ergos. Better trigger, a "safety" that's in the right place, a non-reciprocating charging handle, and a you can get a better mag release from T97.ca as well. Only thing the T97 is missing in my opinion is a bolt release, but I've trained myself to operate the charging handle again after a mag change.

Only disadvantage to the LHG + FTU together is that it does increase the weight of the rifle. With a 1-4 optic and low rings (you can't use a standard AR mount, you'll need the lowest rings your scope can fit with) it's very capable, but noticeably heavier than the straight up factory T97 with the carry handle.

That all said - I really enjoy mine. Lots of fun to shoot. Absolutely reliable, I can't remember the last stoppage I've had (other than an empty mag). Feeds well, and mine fits my magazines well. I can get about 2.5 - 3.0 MOA with quality factory cartridges with heavier bullets, 62 grains or more. But cheapo 45 grain FMJ surplus ammo opens up to about 4.0 - 5.0 MOA.
 
Wait ... am I understanding this correctly ?

The T97, as in the Chinese rifle .... is now $1200 ????

..... and people are buying them ? What am I missing ?
 
What are you missing? Instead of buying a $800 rifle and a $400 flat top upper, now you get a factory version of the same thing for the same money, which a lot of people would do anyways, with some general improvements overall.
