I got my hands on a gen 5 Glock 19 and it feels like quite the treat to have it. I just wanted to share the joy. I haven't gotten to the range with it yet, but here are some initial thoughts.
I ordered the G19 as an upgrade to my Smith and Wesson SD9 VE. Maybe it is.
The SD9VE is one of my more trusted and loved pistols because it works reliably, and accurately enough, and on a slim budget. It is also one of the smallest pistols I have owned.
I have shot it a lot, including at an IDPA event and it handled well. I also practice regularly with it at home with a laser training cartridge. It is hard to beat the familiarity I feel with this pistol. I do wish I was capable of more accuracy with it though.
Right out of the box, the G19 felt so good in my hand. When I put the beaver-tailed back strap on, it was like magic. Bringing the pistol up, I found that the sights presented naturally and in perfect alignment on the target. The G19 was bang on target with the laser training cartridge too. It seems as though very little getting to know this pistol is required. The trigger is not as nice as the Apex trigger in my SD9VE, and the slide release is a little harder to manipulate though. I looks like the Glock is capable of the improved accuracy that I was wanting.
I think that with just a little love, the Glock will give me everything I want. I am SO happy Glock got rid of the finger grooves.
The cutout at the bottom of the front strap is a bit of a nuisance. It will require a little smoothing on the edges to prevent chaffing. I do not feel a marked improvement with the flared mag well though. It feels just like my old Gen 3 to me.
I'll see what I can do about the trigger. I will also look for a slightly extended slide catch. I don't know if anyone makes a replacement for Gen5's ambidextrous slide catches though.
Does anyone know where to find Gen5 goodies?
