Hi!
I've never really been exposed to the world of shotguns until recently after going to the range with a friend.
I was wondering what an affordable shotgun for trap or skeet would be. I'd like to get something with a wood stock as I just prefer the feeling, however I am open to suggestions as far as others go.
Thanks!

Grab an 870 and it will do you until you get enough experience to know exactly what you want. IMO you can't beat it as an affordable general purpose option and you will always have it as a backup if you get something else further down the road.

Talk to NAS guns, pick up a hunter X0-1 over under. It's well above the others in the price range for wood stock over unders. It's a great starter trap gun, points well breaks nice and takes Benelli Mobil chokes so super accurate if you buy the upgraded chokes.

The op is looking for an affordable trap or skeet gun, cooey 840 is certainly not it, remington 870 or 1100 are more realistic choices!

I appreciate the responses! I've heard good things about the Remington 870, I will definitely keep it in mind. The hunter X0-1 over under that Foxer2373 mentioned sounds interesting but I wasn't able to find it with a quick search. Any links?

Sorry it was "Hunt group" they sold out of the X0-1 but the XO-2 is in stock it's the same one but with a stainless receiver instead of black. If you message them ask for Chris he is the owner. For the price it's the best over under I've used and frankly I'll say under $1100 I've used and the only one I love more is my 3k Benelli. But for full value I do recommend buying a set of Benelli mobile chokes for what you need the factory ones are craptastic lol.

Winchester SXP Field Model.

It's a nice Shotgun, and finished better with smoother operation than an 870 Express. IMO

I would spend 1000.00 or so on a used Browning Superposed or Citori or a bit less on a good Miroku. You can always sell them again without too much trouble. If you want to shoot trap and skeet you should have removeable chokes as skeet is usually shot with much more open chokes. Keep the barrel length down around 30". Nothing wrong with an 870 or a 1100 though. Pass on the Cooey.

Right now Cabelas has the SX-4 on sale for $849. Winchester has a $100US mail in rebate, so after the rebate, the total cost is around $725, which is pretty affordable for a quality semi auto shotgun.

not sure id want a pump action if it was just for trap /skeet shooting. but i do have a mossberg 500 that hasn't given me any trouble. ive read great things about the wingmasters as well.
as for price get a good used one over a cheap new one.
ive found the smaller shops have trade ins. there is also equipment exchange on this site.

Big difference between Trap Guns and Skeet Guns, when talking dedicated guns. Otherwise for just busting clay targets from a hand held thrower of a portable "trap", I'll suggest the Remington 870 series. Yes there is the Mossberg 500 series, but I like Remington.

Remington 870 28" pump for me. I use it for everything. Just change up the choke for each purpose. I bought the base model for, I think, 5 or 6 years ago for around $425. Wood furniture. It's been submerged, beat up, tossed around in my ATV & pickup. Doesn't bother me to see her get used. The only complaint, and I believe others have mentioned it, is that the finish on the gun is not great. I don't know how to describe it - it's not shiny and smooth. It's almost like a frying pan. It's such that if it gets wet during the day, it will start to rust on the surface over night. I clean it each time I come back from the hunt anyways, so it doesn't bother me. It's never jammed or screwed up, and I fire everything through it.

Fail to see how the A-5 don't fit this regeem.

Nice guns, love mine but the very low comb and tall receiver make it tough to shoot for me, Ive noticed when others shoot it they're usually quite low too. A little clunky, o well. Really wished it fit me better. BDFT has some sound advice.
