I have a mossberg 500 but the family shotgun growing up was an 870. IMO if you take good care of your gun and are mostly planning on using it at the range, and wiling to oil it after each outing, go with the 870. The coatings on the new ones aren't great so you need to take good care of it but the action is smoother and handles a bit better than the mossberg. However, if you think you may be interested in hunting or there's a possbility you may abuse your gun a bit, I would opt for the mossberg. The action isn't quite as smooth but it is as reliable and tough as they come, plus the aluminum receiver won't rust. Trying to give an unbiased opinion on the pros and cons of the two guns. You honestly can't go wrong with either.
