General Purpose or Practical Rifles?

Virtually all I grab for day to day is my Battue in 308. Only change was a nice second hand factory wood (walnut?)stock.

I run an FX-II 4x in a Mosi mount. It’s the cats asz. I ran a triji 1-4 with green post, but I’m old school and am too used to a duplex so that’s what I went back to. Oh and I slapped a tikka plastic ball on the bolt. For a basically factory rig, it can’t be improved on for me.

2/3 of the time the scope is off, probably more

It’s “MY” rifle!

sounds like one of the closest to what I'm after, prioritizing stainless and too bad they don't do a stainless battue , and yeah right idea with trijicon just wrong reticle, going German #4 on the 1-6 accupoint which has next level glass and fixed eye relief over the 1-4 accupoints, heavy posts for low light or speed work and still get the fine crosshair center and the illuminated dot so blending my irons with red dot with ultra high quality 6x top end ability, will be able to do dial up to hit those distances with a Kenton speed dial turret, and when you put this little tank in those ARC M-10 rings on the integral bases should negate any iron sight benefit or need for backup...if there's a wreck that messes that up then the sos button has been hit and the helicopter better be on the way lol...this a pricy one for sure, it's reminding of my gunwerks experiment ages a go, the battue option would be far more affordable and less cringing and crying when getting it's first scratches and dings, doing a stainless tikka at same time to see how both pan out, tend to think of new projects in 3's due to the kids ;)

No love for the Howa Alpine or Superlite for general purpose?

my ultralight howa build may go on the block here, 100 rounds on barrel, it's a nice rig but still niche end cartridge not for this 'general purpose/universal cartridge' project, have 4 grendels so one can go for now, the howa cost me the most, has the most work, and therefore aggravates me the most even though there's nothing like it with sub 5 lb weight and shoots awesome to 400 with a red dot, anyone interested feel free to pm, have so much that goes with, the cz bottom kit (2 mags), hinged bottom, factory stock/bottom end, talley lows, could be talked into flipping a fx2 6x36 with cds-zl turret that does .3 moa/click all tuned for it already, maybe fx2 4x33 I have with a turret also...anyhow, no time to really look at all that right now

I think it would hard to beat a good bolt battue style rifle in 308, 7mm08, 7x57, 8x57…..

I am very partial to my CZ 557 Lux in 8x57. I also bought an OEM synthetic stock for it. Well built, smooth action, great trigger and accurate. It does it all. I have half a dozen others in more common calibres that fit the bill, but that CZ is tops in my books.

Would you consider a 22" barreled, conventionally stocked 6.5 Grendel with a 3-9x40 optic like your Trijicon green dot crosshair to be a niche setup as well? Or pretty dang close to do-all within 300+ yards minus the big teddy bears?

I think he felt a little undergunned with Old Mr Ephraim nosing around.

As far as range goes a general purpose rifle will be under 200 yards. At least according to the thread of how far your average shot is, and for the most part that seems to be under a 100.

A problem with the Valmet (aside from cost and availability) and most autoloaders is the goofy mag limits.

I think we can all agree that the Lee Enfield #5 (Jungle Carbine) is the ne plus ultra of General Purpose Rifles, it was after all, born out of decades of extensive experience, with the 760 in the 30-06, 280, and 270 being right up there.

Nah, wouldn’t matter what I had in house I would have felt under gunned lol. I’ve walked into their house with k95 in pieces in pack relying on spray so many times. It’s more a mental prep for how to focus if goes sideways, Grendel is plenty strong enough that’s not the worry. You’ll note I was wondering about next project long before boo boo wandered into camp...model 70 vs Hawkeye, most likely to find ammo in remote locations etc. So the 308 thing and this practical thing have nothing to do with the g-bear from a couple weeks back.

At high end of that with 171 average but there’s quite a few from 250-420 to make that number. From recollection the North American average is around 130 fyi. But average means muzzle to double the average for most part.

In North America, I'd feel OK with a reliable .308 Win rifle with good ammo no matter what beast was approaching me.

Is it the best choice for big heavy boned DG? No but at 25 yards it'll do with good shot placement.

For animals 200 yards would be the max and realistically 150.

But what I've seen in the Gaza videos makes me think that having the ability to hit a dinner plate out to 400 yards would be a valuable ability for a general purpose rifle. For this a BDC reticle scope and practice would be the ticket.

Good points. I've been a fan of the bdc Burris scopes for more years than I can recall, for that reason. Nothing fancy, no Christmas trees, just a couple of points on the vertical to help stretch out. - dan

I really feel stainless is overrated, but to each their own. Tikka bluing isn’t amazing but it will outlive all of us with very minor care.

Have you had em out for a few days or more, especially in wet environments?

Not challenging, really want to hear your experiences and how you mitigate the conditions
