General Purpose Rifle - Stock Selection Help

Not sure why you need to run an 18.5" barrel on a bolt gun, 16" is the shortest you can go with a folder and remain NR.

As was said above, you aren't likely to swap the stock for a chassis (especially a folding one) and lose weight while staying under your price cap. A folding HNT26 is pretty much the only option for a lighter weight chassis that has a folder but it's double your budget. That PR Precision folding chassis could be an option but I don't think maintaining the stock mags is an advantage, if you're gonna get a chassis it might as well use AICS mags so you can run 12 rnd mags. If it were me, I'd be looking for an MDT LSS-XL with a fixed to carbine interface, add a folding adapter and a buffer tube with a Magpul CTR. I'd also add some mlok ladder panels to make the Al chassis nicer to handle in the winter. That should keep you around $1000 and give you a folder. If the folder isn't a must-have for you (I think it makes a lot of sense for a General Purpose Rifle) I'd go with an MDT XRS. It's pretty light but way nicer/stiffer than a factory stock, lets you run AICS mags and has an adjustable cheek rest while being quite a bit under $1000.
Because you can’t cut a barrel below 18” under Canadian laws. You can get a factory barrel shorter, but 20” is the shortest Tikka T3X Compact Lite you can buy. I cut it to 18.5 so there was some fat in the event I had to get it recrowned.

Oh gotcha, you did it yourself. You can have a smith chop it to whatever length you want (as long as you maintain OAL for NR status).

Several years ago, I bought a Tikka T3X Compact Lite in .308 based on the "General Purpose Rifle" concept. Similar to a Scout Rifle, but with much broader criteria. Essentially, it's a light, fast-handling rifle with reasonable accuracy.

Here's the video of the concept:

The base platform:
* Tikka T3X Compact Lite - barrel cut to 18.5" (would have gone to 16", but, y'know, Canadian gun laws)
* Leupold LPVO (1-4X with Firedot)

I'm thinking of upgrading the stock - I don't love the factory plastic - and I need some help with the stock/chassis selection. Looking for some ideas from the Gunnutz team to help. Not trying to build a precision rifle, so I don't need a fully adjustable aluminum chassis.

Selection criteria:
1) Should be lightweight - trying to keep the overall package weight around 7-7.5 pounds
2) Cheek riser/adjustable comb
3) Under $1000
4) Folding would be nice, but not mandatory
5) Factory paint/colour options are preferred. Trying to get away from the basic black. Preference only - not a deal breaker.

I'd consider a more traditional stock like the Cadex Tundra Strike or a chassis like the MDT Oryx. I'm quite ignorant of the available options, so hoping to get some help from those who can help.

(Not sure if this is the best section to post, but with the semi-autos being mostly gone from the picture, I thought a "general purpose" rifle might be the new "Black/Green" rifle)
hey dude.

Im running a similar set up. Also inspired by Lucky Gunner's video and the rifle behind Don's Nguyen's "On the Scout" Youtube channel.

Started off this journey with a 16.5 inch Tikka T3x from the states through IrunGuns - it had a wood stock on it, but I sold it and bought the regular plastic stock T3x stock.

Going to black cerakote the action, bolt, bolt knob and barrel.

I'm actually a fan of the plastic stock options from Tikka- although for this version I'm hoping to go with a the compact stock option with the 12.5 LOP- much like the one lucky gunner has in his video. Sourcing one has been a pain in the ass.

Victor Company makes a really great, Low-Profile cheek riser that screws into the top of the stock. Its awesome. Has some spacers so you can adjust it based on where your eye lines up with the scope.

I have a Leupold VX 3HD 2-8 on some talley Rings. Super light weight- 10 ounces. Great class. Also has the Custom dial Turret on it.

I have QD flush cup mounts that I used an older tikka stock to play around with to accept qd sling swivels. I have about 3 installed on the forend and two on either side of butt stock. I find this makes carrying the rifle on hikes wayyy more comfortable.

Limbsaver fitted by a gunsmith onto the buttstock.

Hoping to eventually run AICS pattern magazines in this joint. Red Snake Tactical makes a really cool bottom metal for the Tikka that takes AICS magazines- also a pain in the arse to get here in Canada.

let us know how the build goes bro!

feel free to message me. I love this concept

Thanks for the post. Much appreciated.

I have the Compact Lite, so it's got the 12.5" LOP.

I was reaching out to the community to see if there were some options for a "better" stock for the GP concept, but it looks like the options are limited - at least at a reasonable cost.

I'm going to take a look at the Victor Company riser - thank you for that. Did you buy it directly from VC? Or from a gun shop?

Based on some comments above, I think I'm going to give stippling and painting a try. Add a bit of grip to the forend and use some thick netting to get a grassland/desert camo look to the stock.

I'm a fan of shooting slings, so I made a Rhodeisan sling out of a BFG adjustable. It works really well for a shooting sling and additional support when standing/sitting.

That’s sick man. Ya the victor company cheek rest I actually got from a gun shop in Nova Scotia. Online purchase. I think it was around 100 bucks after taxes and shipping and stuff.

I’m picking up a blue force gear sling also. I like the thicker material over the smooth nylon from Magpul.

Let me know if you want to sell your stock hahaha.

But yah have you looked into mdt LRR (I think that’s what it’s called) stock. Takes AR grips and butt stocks. It’s 869.99 at cabelas. Could be your style?

I’ll take a look.

It’s really cool that someone else got something out of the GP rifle video.

I have a Steyr Scout that I bought years ago. Used it on the Gunsite 270 General Purpose Rifle Course. (Which is worth taking if you want to learn how to get the most out of your bolt gun).

But when I saw the LG video, I was really impressed with the his thought process and broader criteria for a GP rifle. The scout rifle is really good, but what LG proposed is very, very smart.

With the ever increasing prohibitions and restrictions on firearms, it’s a good idea to develop the skills to run a bolt gun with near semi auto speed and efficiency.

Did you check the stoeger Canada website they have t3 stocks in veil camo and they have the stock fill for it you can get them both for a few hundred bucks. Manners would be money is no concern option they come up on gp and the e/e every now and then usually run about 1200
