Hey all. I was re-re-reading an older edition of Calibre magazine, and they have an article about critter defense (pat of a 2 article series, IIRC). The author - I forget his name - points out that his favourite gun for critter defense is Mossy pump gun, for its reliability, KO powers, etc. One of the big selling points as well is the 5-shot magazine. Now, this is my question - does anyone know if you are allowed to carry more than 2 in the mag when out in the bush. I've had shotties checked by the ON MNR when out small game hunting, waterfowl hunting and deer hunting. I was told that the only time you were allowed more than 3 is at a range.

I don't mean to pick the flypoop out of the pepper, but I'm curious.

You can. Hunting regs don't apply when you aren't hunting. Someone can have a PAL without any sort of hunting license and training obviously and as long as they aren't breaking any other rules, technically they are fine.

Technically being the key word though.

Good luck PROVING to someone that you aren't hunting. Maybe if you have a thrower and box of clays at your feet. Not having an outdoor card or applicable provincial hunting equivalent may help as well. That said you are definitely running the risk of being subject to the whims of any CO or judge's bad day and I personally would never bother.

Standing beside a crick oar river with yer fishing rod in your hand
and your shotgun filled to the brim with defense type ammo would
be a gooder example of being in the green.

It's kind of an odd situation, if you ask me. For example, I use a Savage 220 for deer. It is a 20 ga., rifled barrel, which can't be changed to a smoothbore, yet I've been checked for it in the past. No way I can use it for waterfowl Also, one would think that, if it were legal anywhere, Savage would make a mag holding more than 2 shots for it. I know the 3-shot limit is a NA waterfowl treaty, but even in the States I've checked, all shotgun hunting is 3 shots max, whether upland or big game. I sure wouldn't want to be the one to test it, and if 3 shots aren't enough to stop a critter, you're either a) a rotten shot, b) facing a huge bear, or c) time to lay off the drugs, because it's a hallucination. Either way, if 3 don't do it, you're bear food.

I see a lot if guys down south run dogs for deer and have to use shotguns with buck shot. Thu all have extended mags on there semi auto shotguns.some holding 10 rounds of buck shot.vheck out videos by.( Bubba Rountree production) Thu Showtime great deer hunts.

Your in Ottawa right so Ontario. Let me get this straight you want to walk in the bush with 5 shots in the shotgun and see what the CO has to say, You will be charged. Don't think so try it.

How are you going top prove you are not hunting? Now if your standing in a quarry shooting at clays you might be OK, but if you get a prick well he can still give you a fine and you can argue all you want it will be up to you to prove other wise in a court of law. Oh and for critter defense?? If your that scared I suggest staying out of the bush as the CO will laugh at you.

Illegal in Ontario Page 25 in the 2017 Regs. Not hard to know this if you are putting in more than 3 you are poaching as well this is taught in the Ontario hunters course. Your friends know the are breaking the law pain and simple.

Magpies, Crows and in places wolves in BC are open year round. Is Ontario similar?

I can't believe how scared guys are of the Game Warden. If you are going about your lawful business of hiking, berry or mushroom picking, camping etc, what and why would they charge you for having a shotgun or rifle?

In BC some Gulf Islands have shotgun only deer hunts. Not sure if you are limited to 2 shots. I don't think you are limited. Someone will confirm or flame the crap outta me.

My understanding is 2+1 with shot, slugs can be more. So "shotgun with shot" areas are 2+1.

Carrying a gun for wilderness protection, how can you prove your not hunting. Yes in Ontario you can be charged as well even if you are carrying for protection that does not give you a reason to break the capacity law.

Correct I just looked it up for BC, so if you are in the wilderness for what ever reason you can only have 2+1 in the shotgun. This sames to be the same for all provinces. People who keep insisting they can have more then that have never read the regulations.

Show me one law that states we cant carry a non restricted for protection in Ontario......

The onus of proof is on them and not you.....

I don't have to prove I'm not hunting.

Just holster carry a revolver for defense... but still have your shotty with you.

When the CO sees your revolver, he won't think about looking *in* your shotgun to see if you have more than 3 rounds... lol

Utterly false. Police quite often make up charges and the onus is on you to take it to court. For example flashing your lights to let on coming traffic to know about a radar setup police routinely stop people for this and charge them and if you take it to court it will at least in Ontario each and every time be thrown out of court. In fact it has even been in the news in Ontario.
