Hey, I am wondering if any Albertans here know of a decent general season elk area (WMU) on crown land. I got private land elk hunting right around home but I am starting to miss setting up a camp and getting away for a few days. We are looking for an area that we could take the pick-ups or quads into to set-up camp and then be able to leave camp on foot in the mornings. I've been thinking of somewhere south of GP (but not to far south) in the foothills/mountain zones. Either way a few of us will get out to do some bear hunting this spring (will be more of a scouting trip) and see what we can find.

Not looking for anyones secrets here...just trying to narrow the choices down a bit...

thanks

Anywhere south of GP especially on the forestry truck road will be a GONG SHOW. I had friends that did not get their moose draw so they went for elk. Camps every 2km or so along both sides of road, and into bush a bit. I TOLD THEM but they did not listen (Edmonton boys)

You can try the Gold Cache Creek area about 50km south on HWY 40, go east get in along the sMOKY OR cUTBANK rIVER,

Saddle Hills b/w Spirit River and Leglace, but I know off alot of camps in there too. Some are set up in start of bow season and dont come down till end of hunting season.

Maybe try the SW area of Simonette Road south of Valleyview or Little Smokey.

Hope this helps.

Every 2km is a gong show???

Try 400, 10 to 20 camps every F'ing pull out! Your requirement for truck or quad accessible = busy, busy, busy.

The only place I would suggest is the draw only zone down in/near Kananaskis. It is a 6 point only season and there are no vehicles/roads, but hey, at least it won't be crowded.

Good luck.

yeah I was kinda figuring that the area(s) I had in mind would be heavily pressured...Maybe I will have to stick with the spots around home. It just feels like there is something missing from a hunt when you go back to your house instead of a camp.

Hey Mighty Peace we probably live close to each other....do you hunt around home alot?

WOW ! Have to completely disagree on the GP.
South, North or West or East of GP and you are laughing.
Go for the Crown in the South. In around Pinto Creek I have had lots of success, and have gone many times before supper from GP and been able to have been back by dark with an animal.

Two lakes Road is ideal.

There are lots of guys, but most are not from the area and set up right on the road in the obvious places. They usually fill their tags too, but there are enough elk to fill your tags and not be bothered by them, and enough area that you can avoid them all together.

I can tell you of at least three places where you will most likely see no one else, but have a good opportunuity for Elk.

PM me if you;re seriously gonna go that way cause it's a good area.
You may even get a wolf if you are so inclined.
