Genuine 30-30 Hunting Questions.

I handled a couple of Rossi's somewhat recently and even had the opportunity to fire a few rounds through one. I wasn't overly impressed, I would definitely choose a Marlin particularly a pre-safety.
As to the rest I think you know it, and as has been mentioned, you are pushing the old .30-30 to its limits. I think you may find a BLR, Savage 99 or Winchester 88 may be a more suitable compromise. Of course another option is an easier to feed larger levergun, not sure how easy it is to source .45-70 in Australia, the trajectory may make it challenging. You would likely be happy with the .30-30 most of the time but are you going to be happy passing shots that would be in the realm of a .300 Savage or .308?

John Y, say you AI this beastly round, Does it give you confidence to perhaps extend this range a bit? what is your short range, 100m? Ackley Improving using a Woodleigh FN 150gr "30-30" projectile, Does this make it more capable for Short to Mid range Medium game hunting?, in the Bush.

Yeah ya could Lookasaurus, it sort of does become just a little lesser than the 308 IMO, it would tackle the mid sized game that te 308 does, an still not the ' big game' unles under near perfect conditions.- something that doesnt happen on sambar-
heres one for ya, Rossi Rio Grande----- had a red dot but i talked him into taking it off, RRP $1100, he was asking $800 with reddot, adjusted price $600 bone stock Rossi .30-30. ????? thoughts? they do what i want ey?

Yeah true this Dave , TBH, shots can be anywhere from close to 250 quite easily just by being "across Gulley" from sambar.... an say being limited meant being on their Face, as you know the terrain changes as the angles do and sometimes 'getting in' close cant be done....im ok sitting on one hill with a 270winchester and having a Stag on another hill 500m away and Call it -safe.....but i cant sit one side of a gulley with a 30-30 and have a Stag at 250m away and call that - Safe!

Im a realistic under 300m hunter an more often than not do kill them in 30-30 ranges, but thats a majority of hinds an smaller stags, not a big One, a 'Must Have' , an thats where murphys law typically Kicks in...

Personally, I don't think the AI is worth the hassle. The improvement isn't that great. There have been other cartridges over the years that have extended the 30-30 a tad, like the 7mm Waters If you can find one, it did stretch out the range to about 200 meters.
Then again, the Ackley Improved might be a different kettle of fish if it were loaded up with the Hornady Leverevolution bullet.

Ive been offerd a few good prices for Rossi guns, in the $600 range bare, and one Model 94 with a ol nikko sterling with side mounted scope , Im waiting to hear if scope is over bore or not? is that likely? there is a deflector on the scope tube/ring so the cases bounce out, hoping this means its atleast got a scope over the bore???

i put in a offer on a BLR 308 which popped up today for $1,175 OBO, so i offered $950 :D

$550 for a Rossi brand new buyer is moving away - cant take guns etc, Sounds like my kind of price ona 30-30 i can then, scope.

I hve put a sale on my VX2 scope tonight n see if it sells.!!!

I personally wouldn't own any Rossi .The 94 win will either before burdened with a side mt./not over bore unless it is angle ejection post 64 thus not a real Winchester IMO or a forward mounted scout style usually replacing the rear sight. Marlins are scope able but get a JM stamped one not Remington's abortion. With the 170gr Partition anything under 1000lbs dies out to 200 yards.I get a meter penetration on moose with a 170gr Hornady and 32gr Win 748

A Marlin 30 30 was my only hunting rifle for many years and fortunately I never got the memo about its limitations. I got pretty good with it and had no problem taking elk out to 250+ yards with Hornady ftx rounds. If you placed them properly they would go down. Last bull elk I shot was with a Marlin 45/70 lever at 100 yards with my 350 grain hard cast powder coated hand loads driving just under 2000 ft/sec. He dropped on the spot as the round literally broke his spine in half, which is pretty darned impressive if you have ever seen how substantial elk vertebrae are. Love the levers , looking forward to taking an old Winchester lever in 38 55 out this fall.

Try to swap your big bore for one with angle eject. You could at that time go for a 356 or even the 307. Possibly the 356 would be the best performer for your use. All are a reloading proposition

When my eyes got old i knocked the rear sight out of the '94 Winchester and put on a 2 inch section of pic rail . On that i mounted an Aimpoint T2 Micro and it is as it always has been , 200 yards for deer and point blank to maybe 150 for black bear and moose . I don't like the look of scopes on lever guns but the micro red dot looks just fine and the 30-30 still does it's job .

I have my grandfathers model 94 in 30-30win. I dont use it for hunting generally but I know that he shot his fair share of moose with it. Generally 100 yards or less, has not had a scope in its life.

Personally, I wouldn’t touch the Rossi, save your money, walk away.
One last thing, 30-30 is not a 250 yard Elk round.
Just my opinion.

MS, a good mate said the same thing actually, its turned me off wanting th 3030 too bad, one day i will put a marlin 3030 in the safe but when things are relaxed and perhaps my young Son is runnin aroun shootin deers :)

i walked away and spent $500 on a Marlin X 3006! now thats a 250 yarder lol
