It seems to me that while there are genuine advancements in firearms technology, mixed in with it is the 'flavour of the week'mentality possibly as a result of firearms manufacturers convincing people last years latest 'whiz bang ' was now passé'. I can think of several calibers that once were touted as the next best thing as sliced bread, now languishing in gun cabinets ,out shadowed by something new and diferent, but in practical terms a-not really. Obviously synthetic stocks ,albeit not as nice looking as a well oiled hand rubbed walnut stock were a huge advancement for hunters. The 7mm mag ,once the darling of the hunting crowd seems to be slipping as is the 222, and before that, the 22hornet. The Canadian 303 and the US 30-06 that we love to hate still accounts for a lot of meat on the table ,as does my ' go to' 100 year old 6.5x55 swede, which possibly is the reason the modern .260 never really caught on, it just didn't offer that much more. The 30/30 is still a fine deer hunting cartridge, despite its alleged shortcomings, any deer hit in the lungs isn't going far ,but the 25-35,once considered a better choice is rarely seen now. And last but not least, the plain old 22LR soldiers on...not sure why some chambering survive 100 years while the 'newest latest' end up a flash in the pan..could be something to do a population with more money on their hands, not sure

Partly human nature, a desire to be unique or individual, to not be a part of the "crowd". Partly growing up in a society of "consumer manipulation" by large corporations using mass media convincing us that we NEED that new toy. Car and truck ads pop into mind. Plus I think that being a collector to any degree brings with it a desire to own a range of the items of interest. Be they cars, hockey cards, stamps or rifles, collectors "collect". Nature of the beast.

And last, but certainly not least, the guy with the most toys at the end WINS!!! :dancingbanana:

This again?

Use what you want. If you like old cartridges and guns, use them. If you like experimenting with new gear, use it.

Lots of variety out there, try it all. Or not. Whatever gets you excited.

I have way too many overlapping calibers and cartridges, but very few identical rifles.
I like rifles...the cartridge is secondary for me.

Yeah, I just like guns, got way more than I need, and some I bought just because I liked them but I haven't even shot yet... I tend to come back to the old stuff, nice hand rubbed wood stocks but admitedly not as practical as synthetic...not too sure why, maybe something that's stood the test of time proves something.I think the quest for accuracy drives development, and there's nothing wrong with that, although for general hunting purposes, chances are the older stuff works just as well.I remember telling Joe Gibault that I 'needed' a bigger rifle than my 6.5x55 swede for a moose hunt, and Joe, who was an authority in load development his own right ,told me my Swede was perfectly adequate ,all I needed to do was put one shot behind the shoulders then sit down for 20 minutes and go get my moose....some stuff just doesn't change-or needs to
