It seems to me that while there are genuine advancements in firearms technology, mixed in with it is the 'flavour of the week'mentality possibly as a result of firearms manufacturers convincing people last years latest 'whiz bang ' was now passé'. I can think of several calibers that once were touted as the next best thing as sliced bread, now languishing in gun cabinets ,out shadowed by something new and diferent, but in practical terms a-not really. Obviously synthetic stocks ,albeit not as nice looking as a well oiled hand rubbed walnut stock were a huge advancement for hunters. The 7mm mag ,once the darling of the hunting crowd seems to be slipping as is the 222, and before that, the 22hornet. The Canadian 303 and the US 30-06 that we love to hate still accounts for a lot of meat on the table ,as does my ' go to' 100 year old 6.5x55 swede, which possibly is the reason the modern .260 never really caught on, it just didn't offer that much more. The 30/30 is still a fine deer hunting cartridge, despite its alleged shortcomings, any deer hit in the lungs isn't going far ,but the 25-35,once considered a better choice is rarely seen now. And last but not least, the plain old 22LR soldiers on...not sure why some chambering survive 100 years while the 'newest latest' end up a flash in the pan..could be something to do a population with more money on their hands, not sure
