George Gibbs 280 Ross Info

Hello, I recently purchased an old rifle not knowing what it was but I can't seem to find much info on it.

It says George Gibbs stamped on the barrel and it's chambered in .280 Ross from what I can tell. The action from what I have found seems to be a Mauser action of some sort and it looks like it should be a takedown rifle, but I have yet to attempt to disassemble it.

Just wondering if anyone here might know a bit about this rifle and the age and maybe even what it could be worth if anything?

Thanks

Mike”Weiss” on here should be able to help you, contact him, he is super knowledgeable on all these old custom guns!

^ love his channel, best YouTube gun guy by far. I would definitely suggest supporting him on patreon, lots of good additional content and he is happy to answer questions chat on there. I'm guessing he is demonitized on YouTube so it is good to support him so he can continue to show cool guns.

I sold him a rifle once, can't remember what it was for the life of me, wonder if it made it on the channel.

Very cool gun OP. Does it say "Vancouver" on the barrel? Gibbs had a shop there?

That's an interesting rifle. Normally there would be some sort of latch to the takedown mechanism. I don't see one on your rifle, so it looks as though it was intended to be a takedown, but was never completed as such. The bolt knob makes me think this is a post-war build, though it's possible that the bolt body was replaced when the scope was fitted.

The Gibbs firm is still in business, after a fashion. Perhaps contact them and see if they have any info.

That scope and the Weaver mounts are an insult. Looks like the bolt handle has been altered to clear the scope.

Would have been a cased rifle originally, and many Gibbs records still exist if you write them for details.

Gibbs set up and sold quite a few .280 Rosses so not surprising they would supply such a rifle if ordered.

Almost the same:

Thanks for the responses I will message Weiss and see if he perhaps know something about this rifle. Also conor_90 yes it does say Vancouver on the barrel. I also did send an email to the George Gibbs gun company, so hopefully they will get back to me with some info on the rifle.
