You are going to have to reload both nowdays but the Mauser has a more dramatic history than the K31 (in my opinion) and they are just so damn ###y!!!

Which to buy for? Shooting? Collecting?

Buy both. ;)

No money right now? All good things come with time.

Just remember that you can always turn around and sell a milsurp for the same price if you don't like it. Nothing gained, nothing lost.

That's what I love about them. :)
Newer stuff all loses its value...some VERY quickly.

I would personally start with a Mauser. It's a classic design and a great mechanism to start off with. The K31 is a bit more...exotic, and I think it would make a great second or third. I have been thinking about getting one these days, but I have to get my reloading bench dusted first.

K31 is the better deal right now....you can get a nice one for around $250. There were fas less K31 manufactured then '98's. Shooting there is no comparision, K31 has great trigger and is probably the most accurate WWII era milsurp going. They will all have great bores, '98's you will have to look around or pay a premium for a cherry bore. You can also drop some diopter sights for target shooting too.

i just bought a k-31 and it shoots as good as a tikka out of the box i also just bought a k98 israeli converted 308 just waiting to recieve it now,

i would say your average k-31 will shoot much better then a mauser and once you reload it is in fact easier to shoot the k-31 as you can load with 308 bullets, another acurate milsurp to buy is a sweedish mauser

My one complaint about the K31 is the ergonomics. I need to lift my head off the rifle after each shot, or that big ring on the back of the bolt will give me a bloody nose when I #### it. Completely eliminates any speed advantage of the straight bolt.

The detachable mag is nice though.

+1, go the K31, better value right now, lots of accessories, you can get the diopter sights and a decent scope mount...

The SKS is a blaster rifle from Star Wars. It's very common, easy to shoot and can't hit the broad side of a barn! :D

They're reasonably accurate, but nothing compared to a solid battle rifle from the WW2 era.

enfields are great i love them but truthfully don't compare in quality or acuracey to the k-31

Hey, no Enfield bashing! :)

Yes the K31 is built like a Swiss watch and shoots very well but I've seen enfields shoot just as good. The only exception is I've never seen a K31 that shot bad...
