German MG

In Frank (SW Alberta on hwy 3) there is 2 mg08(?) on tripods and a Krupp 77mm field howitzer. It has been a while but I think the story goes like this, father and 2 sons head of to europe and only the father came back. How he got the items over hear I don't know but he erected these war trophies on mounts as a remberance to his sons. The mgs are in ok shape but the tripods are set in the cement and at some time some one welded a length of 7.62 NATO to the recievers.???. I personnally liked the field piece the best. There is also a 77mm Krupp in front of town hall in Wetaskiwin AB. I can't recall but one of the 77's I have mentioned has battle damage on it.

Lots of them, thousands, were brought over by the Canadian Gummint and handed out to towns which had done well in the war-bonds drives.

In Saskatchewan, Western Development Museum(s) once had a whack of them, some in good shape. Haven't been there in a long time, so I don't know if they are still there or not. Out East, Flying Pig at Twillingate and I know where there are a couple Maxims and a couple Moaning Minnies within an hour or so's drive of here. Not so plentiful as once they were.

The problems in the school systems are linked to a solid socialist viewpoint on the part of far too many teachers, allied to that nasty old thing called tenure. Most of them can't be fired, no matter how incompetent, and too many see it a a sinecure, teach as little as possible. I think student evaluations of teachers could help to buck things up; students like a teacher who is interesting..... and that means helping them to learn NEW things..... new to them, anyway. But we first must dispel the myth that we are all and always have been, peaceful munchers of the grass who tolerate any abuse from any source in the holy name of multicult. This country wasn't built by peaceful munchers. It was built by hard work on the part of pioneers: French, English, Scots, Ukrainians, Icelanders, Germans, anybody else who wanted something better than Europe and was willing to work for it. The munchers came later and clutter our cities today; some of them even learn the Roman alphabet enough so they can sign their welfare cheques although direct-deposit is just SO much more convenient.

I guess I`m disgusted with what my country has become. Let`s teach history the way it really was.

`History is the sum total of human experience, to date.` (Dr. Charles Wayland Lightbody)

I am sorry if I have sparked off some opposing views on imigration. Personally my point is where other nationals come to live in UK 'they', not all, should be prepared for integration and acceptance of UK and what it means to be British. Being British means many things (not all good!!) but it does not mean come to UK, then isolate oneself and/or impose the visiting nations ideals on UK....whilst of cse conveniently accepting Pounds and Pence hand outs/benefits contributed by the UK tax payer. I think the US Citizen 'test' is a good idea. My point of view is poles apart from how imigration contributed to making Canada a great nation. I have just come back from Afghanistan, again, and Canada's contribution is hugely significant, extremely professional and puts other countries to shame.
Anyway off topic - I am still looking for MG08 and 08/15 material. Photo shows German machine gunners in masks, with one obviously a British soldier who sneaked into the trench specifically for the photo shoot!!

Easy to confuse the two if you haven't worked with them. The Vickers IS a Maxim when you get right down to it. Maxim owned a huge chunk of stock in Vickers which was in return for the use of his patents.

If you analyse the mechanisms, the two guns are nearly identical, just with the direction of the toggle-break being reversed. Toggle breaks DOWN in the Maxim and you push the crank-handle FORWARD to load; it breaks UP in the Vickers and you pull BACK to load. But that's about it, apart from a single body-cover for the Maxim and two for the Vickers because it has a separate feed-block cover. They WORK the same and the one is about as reliable as the other...... which is sort of like saying that gravity works all the time. They are THAT reliable. WONDERFUL mechanisms: controlled operation in every phase, NEVER anything loose and slamming backward and forward, banging on things and battering the guts.

But I'm blithering .....again.

Just for fun, can anybody name a MODERN MG which can be torn down and rebuilt completely in 2 minutes or less? With either of these, it was common practice.

Maybe we're not quite as smart as we wish we were.

lots of nice pics,i'm also looking for parts(pistol grip)or some prints.would like to build a display model.

A full sized display model would likely be considered to be a replica firearm - a prohibited device.

damn,just cant win,but i'm talkin replica on the outside,no internals, solid rod for a barrell.still a replica?

Put a set of airsoft guts into it and it's a toy. Some of those airsoft 'guns' are really impressive; I got fooled by a Luger..... at 8 feet! I've owned Lugers for just short of 50 years now.... and this one fooled me!

Failing that, something 'designed to discharge blank ammunition only' would fall into the category of a non-gun.

The entire legal system is so screwed-up that it is without doubt Canadian: blanket prohibitions that make little sense, and carefully written with a 4-inch brush so that it can make criminals out of us..... and billions for the legal profession.

Set up a movie company; then you can have a hundred of them!

I remember what I think is a Krupp 77mm from WW1 in front of the court house in Peace River, AB.

I wondered how the Government of the day at the time, (LIB) forgot to take it away.

I am still hoping to find German MG parts in Canada so hope the moderators allow my three threads: German MG thread (general items) and then the 2 specific MGs - MG08 and MG08/15 threads. I am hoping they are of interest and show period images and specific guns and parts.
Nice view of a captured Colt.
