German MG08/15

I have never heard fo maxims being used (im sure they were)...

But, apparently the Germans LOVED the Lewis gun...far superior to their 'light' machine gun, the 08/15

It was common practice that if you captured enemy weapons you would use them against them at the time if you could. I heard that Allied troops were trained in the use of German field guns just for this purpose. After said battle the captured weapon then became a war trophy ready to be carved into or painted by the capturing unit. I think the marking on this gun is the equivalent of carving "so and so was here" into a tree. Great piece!
 
Since the date of manufacture is on the Maxim, you could probably trace it back to where the 4th Canadian Infantry division was and get a rough idea where they captured it.

I'm going to be optimistic and say either Vimy Ridge or Passchendaele.
