Hey Guys.

I am not sure if I should post this here or not, but I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find out information on a relative that served and died with the German military in WWII? I have found information on my Grandfather, attestation papers etc, who served Canada in WWI and again in WWII., but is there a German equivalent?
 
I have done such a search on my father. You can apply to the Deutsche Dienststelle (WASt) in Berlin. They will provide you (for a small price) information about the fate German soldiers and prisoners of war in Germany. Typically, they provide a list of the postings and dates of whomever you are searching. Not a complete service record, but interesting non the less. Here's my fathers:

He was captured in N. Africa while at a hospital recovering from being wounded. They kept him as forced labour untill 1948.

"...is there a German equivalent?..." A lot depends on where he was. If he was in Russia, a lot of German troopies just disappeared.

Well, the story, as told to me by my father (who was 10 years old when the war ended), goes like this. As most of you know, at least I hope most of you know, not all German's were Nazis and didn't support the party or Hitler, but when you were called you went, period. So, in trying to avoid front line service near the end of the war, my Opah advised his 17 year old son, my Uncle, to to join the Officer Corp., as a clerk. Since Germany was getting pounded from all sides, all bodies were called up and he was killed in the late stages of the war, in Germany.

I plan on going to visit Germany again next year and I hope to find his grave site, if any, and pay my respects. Sadly, Vets in Germany do not get the respect they deserve from their own nation.
 
Look, My grandfather don't speak a lot of this time, lot of good memories but a lot are very bad, lost a lot of friends during the war and after.
a stays in Eastern Front 1940 at 1945 January before to come on Berlin for the last fight.
a serve in Wehrmacht(Leutnant)( 40-44) in first and after (44-45)(SS-0bersturniführer)in Waffen Ss.
a stay in jail 8 years after the end of the war.
I love my grandfather a Great man with a hardly life
Now is 90 year old.
