German STG44 vs M1 Garand

Anyone have opinions on the German STG44 rifle, ..that is reliablity as compared to the M1. which was very reliable as it had been developed in peacetime and its kinks had been largely eliminated,..where as the STG 44 was manufactured under wartime conditions.....
 
Not an expert on either but the Stg44 is rearded as the first true Assualt Rifle meant for medium and short range operations. The M1 Garand was a battle rifle meant for longer range encounters.

I could be wrong but I don't know of any country emplyong a battle rifle as their primary troop weapon now. So in that regard the Stg 44 was ahead of it's time.

Just my two Cents....

edit: just re-red your post - in terms of reliability I wouldn't know....so I guess I just posted a useless bunch of drivel...

The MP-44 lent itself much better to after market mods than the Garand did....when you trick them out with an EOTech, a BUIS, a RIS, and the other gucci kit that is now en vogue, you get a sweet piece of gear. When the Wehrmacht issued them like this, it was only for their most elite of units, mostly the Anbau-Soldat (do a google search on Anbau German and you'll see some neat unit history info)

Where can I get a stock adapter like that, and how does the rail mount to the receiver? Does Marstar carry carry the upgrades?
 
Hey Guys , thanks for your interesting input,...the Germans were certainly very much ahead in their thinking as compared to the Alliies,...the Brits saw that the 7.92mm Kurtz cartridge was the way to go , and developed the .280 British..or 7mm NATO Cartridge,..the U.S. would have none of this..had to be .30 cal...then they turned around and forced the little 5.56mm on NATO.....one still hears stories of bad guys in Somalia,Iraq or A'stan..hopped up on some sort of drug taking 5.56mm hits and still shooting their AK.....it still boggles me that the M16 prior to issue in Vietnam..was tested by shooting at watermelons at a picnic ....

If one watchs closely some of the ww2 German newsreels,..one can see the STG44 carried by German troops....seemed fairly common in the Battle of the Bulge or the Ardennes offensive,..the last big German offensive against the Western allies in December 1944.

I read a article once that it was issued on the eastern front...but a steady supply of the 7.92 kurtz ammo was a problem.

fired one in full auto - was the most controllable full auto I've ever fired - even more stable than the thompson

No surprise there for me. Its clear to me the Germans learned a lot about full auto firing - just look at the stock and the position of the barrel down low with the high sights. This is optimum for controlling muzzle flip, something the Americans copied with the M-16.
 
We can get them without the go fast switch, but the ammo is almost non-existant here. Reloading is a must if you want to shoot them a lot. If I had the money I'd get one.
