Get rid of .40 to get 9 and .45?

I have all 3 calibres over my 5 handguns. Um effective stopping power, I dare say the .40 may be the best as it is right in the middle. As far as a 9mm not having stopping power, does anyone want to stand 75 feet down range while I enjoy my 9mm? Didn't think so. Reality is, if you are a good shot, as the gangsters always said, 2 in the chest, 1 in the head, 9mm is more than enough. Unless your being chased by a bear, get your shotgun cuz your 45 isn't going to help either. My opinion, you sound like you count the coins as they blast down your barrell, sell the 45 and start saving your money as that seems more important to you than enjoying your guns. I should have been a shrink.

As was stated before over and over. Get a 22. Inexpensive to shoot. You can carry out all your drills if you get one similar to your centrefire pistol. It gives you a great starter to help introduce others to the sport and it will help work out any flinching you might develope with a centrefire. I really don't understand why people don't take rimfires seriously. Just about any 22 is more accurate than most shooters and can greatly enhance your range time.
I usually start with 20-30 rds of 22 then blast away with what ever I am doing that day (9, 357, 44,45 etc) and then finish with another 20 rds of rimfire. See if fullhouse 44 mags don't make you flinch.

That and $1.50 will get you a cup of coffee, but think about it.

The collective wisdom of all the obese internet armchair commandoes is that there is not a whole lot of difference in the effectiveness of these cartridges. Buy whatever you like.

Never ever sell a gun to purchase another you will in most cases lose money when you sell and then you will end up missing that gun and kick yourself for the rest of your life for selling it...

So here is my suggestion keep the other guns be patient save up your money and buy the 45 that you like... :D

Depends on the gun! What .40 do you have? what .45 are you thinking of getting?

I had 9's and .45's but sold my .45's and got a 10mm  I'll probably get a .40barrel for it down the road.

and what's this deal with 9mm is just for range? it's more than enough for protection.

both the 9 and the 40 have a following in the police/armed forces in this country- somewhere along the line that might allow you to cheap( free) ammo, or brass, or both- MAYBE- the 45 DOES NOT - it's ONLY SHOOTERS that use this caliber- you're going to have to buy all your stuff ALL the timefor that caliber- i would say get rid of the ONE of your 9s, and get the 45 from the proceeds of that sale- if you go norinco, the sale of the 9 should just about cover a norinco 1911, which isn't a bad place to start-

While I was at the range yesterday I picked up over 300 once fired 9mm brass that someone had so kindly picked up and put in a bucket...

Don't load 9mm but took it thinking I would trade it for some once fired 40S&W...

40 cal is getting even more popular than 9mm in my neck of the woods. Many police agencies are switching to it as well. I love my 40 good power but hardly any kick and 40 just keeps getting easier to find.

Enjoy!

Hey, CGNers,

Just wanted to hear your thoughts on this. Basically, my first handgun I purchased was a .40. I did this because I figured .40 was the middle ground between 9 and .45 in terms of cost and power. I have since purchased a 9mm. OK, well, 2 9mms :D. I am also now strongly considering purchasing a .45 pistol and it's probably going to happen in the next month or two. Now without starting a debate on the best calibre, just wondering your thoughts on getting rid of the .40 to help fund a .45.

Although I would like to have a variety (something in 9, .40, and .45), my logic is basically this.... I didn't shoot the .40 very much because it was getting a bit expensive. I now have a couple of 9s which are cheaper to shoot so I can use those as practice/fun. Not that we are allowed to defend our lives in Canada, but IF something bad was to happen (hurricane Katrina style, zombies, whatever) and I needed to defend myself, I could use a .45. I feel like this makes a .40 no longer required. With the 9s, I would use those to practice since I'm not a millionaire. And the .45 is for taking care of business... so the .40 would just get neglected.

I kinda rambled but I think you guys get it... let me know what you think please! I value your constructive input.

Thanks,
Sam

I read your post, and here is best solution for you.

Sell'em all, and buy yourself Ruger Mark III .22LR.

If you have an interest in rifles, buy yourself an SKS too, and you are all set.

If you are considering the .45 why not consider a 10mm?
If you thought the .40 was/is expensive to feed wait till you start paying
to feed the .45.

The RCMP, are the last to hold out on the 9mm and I have no idea why anyone who is risking their lives every day they are under gunned in almost every situation when it comes to a confrontation where there is an armed individual.

There is merit in the gun that can make the bigger hole will win, but then again it is usually the first one who pulls the trigger first gets to go home at the end of the shift.

Tight Groups.

here's what you ought to do:

buy a 22, mug a lady, buy a 9, mug three teens sitting in a BMW, buy a 40, rob the corner store, buy a 45, rob a Harry Rosen store, buy an AK-47, rob a bank.

you gotta work your way up, mate!
