A friend of mine has a 1911 A1 he got back in the 80's with the barrel leaded. Does anyone have any good tips for unleading the barrel without damaging it?... or taking it to a gun shop? Any advice would be appreciated.

Wind copper or brass wool (similar to steel wool) around your jag or whatever and have at 'er. You should also find out the reason for previous leading problems, cast bullets, if done right, shouldn't cause any cleaning/leading problems IMHO.

vinegar & peroxide 50/50. plug barrel, fill, wait 5 minutes. Clean with patches & oil, repeat if necessary. Mixture may damage bluing but will not harm metal.

Hoppes Tornado Brush in the appropriate caliber. About 4 passes scrapes it all out. They are essential gear for shotguns too.

Lewis Lead remover-Brownells sells them. One or two passes and the barrel would gleam. A complete pistol set is worth around 20 bucks and you can carry it with you to the range. No muss, no fuss just pull it through the barrel.
