My eyes are dim, I can not see... My specs are bi-focal so I can't use my open sights very well anymore. I've been slowly converting to scopes on my guns but my 1895 manufacture Win 94 got a tang sight.
I took a couple 30 30's and Remington pump 30-06 to the range today. My Savage 1899 with newly mounted 4x sighted in nicely with about a dozen shots, 5 just to find the paper. The tang sight on the Win 94 was just screwed into place and the open sight knocked off to get it out of the way. First shot the elevation was less than an inch high and an inch left, second shot took out the bull. That's it! Two shots and I was happy, no adjustment needed.
The Rem 760 pump has a new, never mounted, originally sold in 1999, now bought from an estate, Leapers 1.5-6x42mm scope with a 30mm tube. Looks awesome! Especially since I only paid $25. New, this scope would be about a hundred dollars. Seems it isn't worth the $25 I paid. Twelves shots to sight it in and on the last shot the entire cross hair assembly fell off. No $&it! It fell right off, mounting ring and all are rattling around inside the scope!
Back to the drawing board. Next time I'll go whole hog and maybe spend as much as thirty bucks for a scope.

Had a nice outing at the range!

Yeah, you get what you pay for, usually, when it comes to glass. At least you have a nice variable telescope. Have any kids that can play with it?

Scopes are one item where quality shows usually really fast. I could never understand guys who don't bat an eye at dropping $1000 or more on a rifle and then put a Bushnell Sportview in aluminum mounts on it.

After wasting a lot of money over the years on cheap optics that always seemed to have something wrong with them, I have finally come to the conclusion that when it comes to optics such as scopes or binos, you get what you pay for most of the time. Sometimes, you can luck out with a cheap purchase, but I'm tired of trying to luck out. The next scope I buy is going to be a good one that is well researched before I lay out the cash. I already made the move on binoculars. The first three pair I had were cheap and so annoying to use, I only looked through them a few seconds at a time. Finally, I bought a pair of Swarovski HD 10x42's and can look through those crystal sharp optics till the cows come home.

For what it's worth, I've also had $500 Leupold's fail on my 45-70 with heavy loads. For me it's buy once, cry once. I try to keep $500 as my minimum for optical equipment. Most of mine are in the $1000-$1500 range and I swap them between rifles.

For heavy recoiling rifles, I prefer low magnification, fixed power optics...good ones..
Never had a M8 4x, 6x36 or 6x42 Leupold fail on anything.

But I agree with those observing that cheap optics are likely to bite you.
This will usually happen at the most inopportune time as well.

Eagleye.

I am with Eagleye with regards to fixed power scopes on heavy hitters. I have a few 6x36 Loopys that seem indestructible, I even use them as a carry handle at times. I have never had a quality fixed power fail yet.

As for variables I have found the Nikon's high end and Leupold VX2 to be the minimum I will buy for reliability. I go up from there.

However old Bushnells from way back when B & L made them were great scopes IMHO.

I have that setup and it shoots 1-1.5 moa all day long... Terrible day for what ever I'm shooting at

Funny how some people always write off certain price ranges, brands, etc. Ill admit if course there is stuff I won't by because of whatever reasons but some people are just unreasonable. My last coyote was killed by a $360 vanguard with a $200 leupold and it could not have dropped any faster.

All that being said I believe there is a trend that you get what you pay for but there's many outliers and exceptions that often get overlooked.

Why would I buy a $25 scope? $100 when new?
I was buying a rifle from an estate, the scope was lying next to it just begging to be mounted. I bought the pair and made a comment to the seller that "At least if the scope is no good, I'm only out $25." I seemed to have it pegged from the outset.

I also have a 4X Leupold on another rifle. It seems to be okay! And my boys gave me a Bushnell Elite for a Christmas present that is my "go to" hunting rifle and scope combo. If Rifle price should = scope price, I should be shopping for cheap scopes, but that Leapers sure didn't last. Pardon me! It did last, and worked great, for the first twelve shots. :)

Ever had an ugly chick just hanging off you desperately at bar close? Same thing...not worth it.
