It's about time for me to get a cheap rimfire-repeater.

Just for plinking, no target-shooting.

Been thinking about a Norinco JW-15 or a Savage Mark II

What can you guys tell me about these two rifles?

I have several but no as loved our Ruger 10/22's.
The cost difference between 10/22's and decent bolt action repeaters is pretty small but the fun factor is much greater. Mine are just run of the mill rifles (albiet a bit over scoped) but I get great accuracy out of em...my wife and I can both (constently 9 out of 10 shots) nail grass rats out to 100 meters with em. In fact, I sill manage to drop the little devils at 200 meters about every other shot....that ain't bad for a 250 dollar semi-auto plinker.

if i had to choose between the two, the Savage would win in my books. And a 10/22 semi auto wouldn't be a bad idea if you can own such a gun in your neck of the woods.

I'm going to have to come into the conversation at this point and join the Savage crowd. I have a Stevens 300 bolt action repeater which is pretty well a direct copy of the Savage MKII, minus the Accutrigger of course. I also have a Savage 64G semi-automatic .22lr. Both of them are incredibly well made guns for the money and have never let me down. A friend of mine has recently allowed me the use of his older 10/22, and from what little I have handled it, it seems to be a truly excellent rifle.

The 10/22 has the accessory market won hands-down, but my Savage 64G was almost half of the price. Pick both up and see which one you like better.

I could also get a 120mm mortar if I wanted, but I want a .22 repeater.
For a semi-auto I need a weapons purchase permit, .22 repeaters are free to own for anyone who's 18.

Thanks for your advice. I'll check out the local stores for a Savage.

The 17 ammo is incredibly expensive compared to .22 ammo. shipping costs have to be added to the price too. A brick of 500 of .22 ammo can probably be got for less $ than a box of 50 .17 cal.

AGREED! The criteria was a rifle for plinking. The .22 rimfire ammo is available almost everywhere, but I think it would be difficult to find 17 ammo in Europe at a reasonable expense. A semi-auto is out because of licencing restrictions.

Of the two rifles, I would definitely buy the Savage Mark II with Accu-trigger rather than the Norinco. I have three of them and fire about 7 or 8,000 rounds a year at Gophers. They are very accurate.

I'll check out both of them and then I decide which one.

.17 HMR is available over here, too, but at an insane price.
So it isn't really an option.

Savage MkII with accu-trigger is my choice. Second choice would be one without the accu-trigger. Have fun shopping and enjoy whatever you decide to buy Kampfhamster!

Savage

Savage for sure.......absolutely no contest in the accuracy dept. I have the Mark II BTVS and by far the most accurate rimfire I have ever seen. Easyily shoot the tops off dandylions at 50 yards.ON paper its ragged 1 hole 1/4 inch groups...no sweat! No way you'll find better for the money. My bro has the plain synthetic Mark II and its darn near as good. I guess it kinda depends on if you really need to take the whiskers off a squirrel at 30 yards but for my money I'll take Savage any time.

Everyone on here seems to lean towards the Savage. Personally I would love to try one, just because I like variety. I own a Norinco, and have no complaints. Just for fun one day at the range, I shot 150 rounds of Winchester Super X long rifle at 50 yards through it. Got an inch and a half group. No fliers. I won't say the Norinco is better because I don't know, this is just some feedback on the Norinco.
