Just received this S+W .22 last week, and have been pondering options.

I've seen a bunch of 4" barrelled examples, but as I can't legally own one, I'm wondering if it is legal to get a 6" cut down by a gunsmith? I like the 6", but I'd be really happy with 4.25-4.5. Any one know?

Absolutely you can have it cut shorter and providing it is 106mm or longer it remains as restricted. There are a few really good smiths capable of fine work to help you out, and after, the gun will need to be reregistered with the new barrel length. Seems a shame to cut such a nice barrel but if u are set on having a shorter version its your choice and you need to be prepared to pay for it as good work isnt cheap. Folks like Gunnar at ARMCO(a sponsor here) or Barry Jensen at Bits of Pieces in Delta can do it. Depending on their workload, it may be weeks before they get to it but do some checking around for a smith. When u find one, check for references are there are lots of butchers out there too.

I wouldn't do it to this one, it looks pretty minty. I do have a line on a couple others though, and I wouldn't feel bad about cutting one of them down. As for the cost of getting it done, I'd be willing to do it, cause I can't buy a factory 4".

Barry replaced a long barrel on a High Standard .22 with a 4-1/2" barrel for me. Fine work. He's very busy and probably can't do it in less than some months, but it would be good.
