Getting a Resricted weapon?

A firearm is not a weapon? Give me a break. You guys sound like a bunch of delegates at a liberal party caucus meeting with all that politically correct BS. Guns are weapons and there is absolutely nothing wrong with allowing civilians to own weapons. That's why concealed carry permits in the U.S. are called Concealed Carry Weapon permits, not Concealed Carry Firearm permits.

If the word "weapon" makes you cringe perhaps you should pick another hobby.

Well I don't know if I would call it a weapon. I would call it more of a tool. But like almost any tool, it can be used as a weapon. In my books it is only a weapon if you use it with lethal force on someone. Don't get me wrong, I'm not the type to cringe when some calls my guns a weapon. I just merely correct them and explain why I would not consider my guns as weapons. :p

I don't like when people use the term because when the anti's come looking and the place is full of "I want a good restricted weapon" or "i'm looking for a good weapon, either 9mm or .357 and a bullet proof vest" It just doesn't look good for our cause.

It's not the word weapon that makes me cringe, it's the way people use it.

Do you really have to go around calling people liberals? It's not very nice you know.

Once when I was a younger kinder Jonny Nitro, I went down to the docks to help my dad with his sail boat.

I called the ropes on the boat "ropes" some old fart corrected me loud and clear in front of everyone..."those are sheets, not ropes" Made me feel like a bag of dirt. I always thought of him as the "Boat Snob Guy" and believe me there were a lot of those guys around that club. Seems like there are a few "Firearms Snob Guys" around here too.

Ropes - sheets - Whatever
Firearms - Weapons - Guns - Tools - Whatever

Don't get caught up in it and divide the pro-gun team. It seems the guys that are trying so hard to protect us against the evil left are the first to try and create a divide in our own group.

So to hell with it! Weapon, gun, sheet, rope, whatever you like... De Gustibus Non Est Disputandum

Believe me, the antis need no excuses to ban guns. They don't care what you call your firearm. They already have a list of prefabricated inflammatory expressions like "high powered semi automatic assault sniper rifle" at their disposal.

By the way, I didn't mean to call you personally a liberal. I just think that excessive political correctness is counter-productive and should be left to our granola-eating friends. "Firearm" and "weapon" have been interchangeable terms since the invention of gunpowder. On American message boards, people routinely refer to guns as weapons and I have never seen anyone throw a hissy fit over it.

BTW... legal definition:

Weapon: Anything used, designed to be used, or intended for use in causing death or injury, or for threatening or intimidating anyone, including a firearm;

Firearm: Any barrelled weapon that is capable of causing death or injury;

Calling it a firearm is being more specific than calling it a weapon.

I have to agree with everything Capp has said here. Some guy calls his pistol a "weapon" then everyone rushes to correct him all the while talking about how inconsequential the difference in terms is. Why bother mentioning it then? The whole thread turns into an argument from both sides, and the original question doesn't get answered. Which I haven't helped with at all. Rather than enjoy our chosen sport we all have to watch what we say in case the scary Liberal spies are reading our words and secretly taking away our firearms. Rant off?

(I'm having a bad day, sorry for the rant)

I prefer to go by the definition of firearm vs. weapon. A weapon is defined as: A weapon is a tool which can be used during combat to kill or , to destroy property, or to otherwise render resources non-functional or unavailable. It may be used to attack and defend, and consequently also to threaten. The use of weapons has been recorded since the advent of cave painting, and the process has been formulated resulting in both martial arts and strategic doctrines.

None of my firearms have been used to kill, destroy property, attack, defend, render resources non-functional, or threaten anyone. Hence, they do not meet the definition of a weapon. I think of it more as a tool, to knock down targets at the range. You need a golf club to go golfing, its not a weapon, but it can become a weapon if used against someone. The same for a gun. You cant shoot trap without a shotgun, consider it a driver. You need it to play a sport, but it could be used as a weapon.

As for the original question, you need your restricted PAL, become a member of a club, you don't need a PAL to do that. Then when you get your PAL, you can buy your pistol, tell them you belong to a gun club, then just wait. For an ATT, I would get one that allows you to take your guns to any club in Canada, that way you can move around to a different range if you want to.

Lets look at it this way....Dirt Bag (assailant, defendant, etc...) uses a weapon, the police officere that arrests him carries a firearm.
