Just picked up a 1975 Win 94 in 30-30.
It's just for hacking around at the range. Dirt cheap, appears almost unfired but has the leprosy on the receiver typical of this age range.
Cleaned it up. Oiled any pivot pins. Put a dot of moly on anything that slides. Didn't over do it. It feels much smoother now.
Anything else I should be doing?

The rear sight has the standard elevator, plus two screws that appear to allow the sight to move slightly up and down.
I assume I do the rough elevation with the elevator then fine tune it with the screws?
Was just looking at a 1977 Win 94 and the sight on mine is much better - the 1977 one is just a large "V" notch like a cheap buckhorn. Looks like something off a $10 Cooey.

Amazing how loose and complicated it seems compared to my Marlin 336.

Spend a couple of hours in front of the TV working the lever. (unloaded of course!) I find that a John WAYNE movie is the most appropriate. The old '94 action will smooth up. Remember, work it like you stole it. '94 s need to be levered hard. Baby them like a Marlin and they will jam. Wait till you experience the dreaded Marlin jam in your 336, you will love that 94 even more.
cheers Darryl

All of the above is true, if you want to get technical, you can detail strip the reciever, take the sharp edges off of everything, polish the sides of the hammer, add a touch of your favorite lube to the hammer screw, and smooth it out even more.

If you are not mechanicaly inclined. I'd leave the detail strip alone.

yes, a John Wayne movie will make your shootin' iron a whole lot more accurate......smoother to lever too......

John wayne Movie? I use my big fishtank
As for the back sight issue, there is only one cure. Jerk it off, and put a peep sight on it

Slash5, if you can fine tune that rear sight further with those teeny, tiny, screws you are a better man than most.........What you may find out with many centerfire win94s is that third notch is pretty close to on for 100 yards, with factory 150-170 grain jacketed in 30-30.
I have found this to be so with a 44 trapper and my 30-30 carbine........with appropriate big game factory ammo.

PS If you do alot of shooting you will find that a larger action screw on the left hand side, will work itself loose, just SNUG up only, all action screws, with proper sized screwdriver and you should have no problems on the hunt.............

"...compared to my Marlin 336..." Much newer design. The 336 was introduced in 1948. The Winchester '94 is a 19th Century design.

As a quick side note, since everyone has reminded me in thier responces, my
30-30 now has a Wiliiams FP peep with a Firesite up front....my 44 mag trapper does not because at the closer ranges it is used, I do not feel the need to change it......
Thanks for the reminder SC......
