I have had a long break from airguns since about 2008 and have focused on powder burners since then but lately have been wanting to get back into shooting airguns, mostly informal target shooting but open to trying some of the official target disciplines as well I have an Avanti 747 pistol on the way and will likely eventually buy a rifle as well. I have been having some difficulty finding a source for regulation size paper targets and clubs that cater to airguns around Calgary/surrounding area. if anyone here has any suggestions please let me know.

Nikkonos is the Quebec based seller I always dealt with when I was competing. Excellent service and a wide array of airgun competition related products. Here's their page for 10m AP targets. Unfortunately shipping costs as much as a 250 pack of 17cm x17cm targets... So probably best to order a few packs or some other items at the same time to help reduce the proportion of shipping cost. These are top grade targets which cut cleanly even at lower velocities like what a 747 puts out. Avoid the so-called practice targets, as they tear badly and are impossible to score.

Thanks for the heads up on the cibles targets ... and the warning against "practice targets" part of why I'm looking for quality targets rather than printing them myself like I do for center fire is that the paper tearing from low velocity pellets is such a pain in the butt.

He's got metal traps as well, which these pistol targets can drop into. But they're loud on impact so I'd recommend either bolting the trap to some heavy carpet or foam against your plywood backstop, or pressing Duct Seal (about $5 or less per pound at Home Depot in the electrical section) onto the inside of the trap. I like duct seal as it's very quiet for indoor practice, but it does take maintenance picking out the piles of pellets when they build up and occasionally adding fresh putty. Or you can just let it build up into a pile of lead buried in duct seal, that works, though slightly louder, still a lot quieter than pellets on steel plate.

I have put together a duct seal trap with a 2x4 frame and a carpet square and plywood to catch any strays that miss the target. The 747 is pretty low on the power scale so I'm pretty confident my setup will suffice for safety. The pistol should arrive either tomorrow or Tuesday so I will know soon enough. I have some crosman 25 ft pistol targets to get me started but will be ordering some actual regulation targets sooner rather than later. I'm also hoping to find some like minded people to shoot with. I talked to someone from the Calgary rifle and pistol club about the airgun events they have but they didn't seem to be very receptive to newbies and I don't know any members there to try it out as a guest. Does anyone know of any other airgun events or groups around the Calgary area?

I recently just got out of airgun target shooting, and sold my 747 pistol just a few months ago. Its a great accurate pistol, you cant go wrong with it. the set up you describe will be more then good at handling it. Its by far not the most powerful pistol, but it is one of the most accurate. If you decided on selling it in the future to upgrade you will have no trouble selling it and will pretty much get back what you paid for it.

Bass Pro in Calgary has 10m airpistol targets but they aren't the best quality. The Calgary Rifle and Pistol Club does airgun shoots but they are on the higher end of the spectrum, preparing shooters for nationals and international comps.

looks like Ill be stopping by Calgary rifle and pistol club to grab some targets... in other news I am quite pleased with the Avanti/daisy 747 triumph I received from D&L airguns based on reviews I was expecting a very accurate but toy-like pistol and was pleasantly surprised to find it is actually a solid feeling piece of equipment the plastic bolt feels a but cheap but seems to work just fine. shooting this thing has bumped my ego down a few notches though... I'm an ok shot with a two handed grip on my powder burning pistols but shooting this thing one handed is hard!!! a set of muscles that don't get used for much of anything else and a front heavy target pistol shot one handed add up to a sore arm and embarrassingly bad targets at 10 meters I don't have airgun targets yet so I used a 200m bench rest target and found I could keep my shots inside the outer ring and a few shots nearer the center but nothing resembling a "group" yet

Yeah. shooting one handed is a whole new challenge for most people. It certainly separates the marksmen from the spray and pray guys. 10m with an air pistol is a challenge, when you master it try Free Pistol...50m one handed with a .22. It'll humble pretty much everybody that tries it.

At one time my dad used to buy square pieces of carpet with stickum on the back to line his traps

Can anyone recommend any good resources, books, videos for someone looking to learn 10m air pistol techniques? Most of what I can find on YouTube is footage of competition or not in English. My local library also seems not to have any books on Olympic style pistol shooting

The targettalk.org forums are probably the best overall resource. Many training tips available there along with active and former competitors and sometimes coaches. Watching ISSF air pistol competitions on Youtube can also be quite useful in understanding elements of stance, timing, etc.

Be aware that 'Rover' at targettalk is a sarcastic piece of work who loves to yank people's chains. I think he's actually an okay guy and at times he's even helpful, just tends to be something of a pest, as a sort of hobby. Most other members don't seem so interested in joking around and there are many serious shooters among them.

thanks for the heads up on the target shooting references... I picked up 100 ISSF 10m pistol targets and tried shooting 10m at the official targets for the first time yesterday... my score over 60 shots was 405 so I think I have lots of room to improve lol
