Getting gear together for the range

Take a friend to introduce into the shooting sports and a camera to take his/her photo....

I really like this one!

A bottle of water is always a good one if there isnt a concession stand or a vending machine around.

I find I'm at the range for up to 3 hours sometimes, so a snack is always good, beef jerky or chips or something like that.

The things I would consider luxury items (not required for health and saftey or the law) is the following:
Leatherman Wave or MUT -- a good multi tool is a must IMO.
Zip Lock bags -- large and medium. Good for brass or bit that you are mucking about with.
Batteries for optics and earpro -- the worst thing is to forget these and it throws a wrench in your plan.
Small tool kit -- punches (flat/roll/drift), small brass hammer (the Lyman one is great with the different tips), screwdriver ect. This is a great thing to have when you need to knock a sight or help a buddy fix something. There is a lot that can be done with a hammer and a screwdriver.
A spare trigger lock and zip ties -- things break, locks are no exception. Don't get caught with a busted lock.
Stapler with staples -- can't go wrong with this.
Various oil solvents and cleaning stuff -- the Otis kits are good. The cables stow well and are really handy.

That's what items I bring that aren't really needed but good to have. .

Just picked up my first handgun, S&W 17 .22, and am trying to get some gear ready for the range. I have all locks and cases required for legal transportation as well as a membership to the range I will be going to. I have been shooting and hunting for 25 yrs so I have the the safety equipment I need.

What do you have in your range bag you consider "must have" for handgun shooting?

I am also wondering about range procedure. I know it could vary from range to range but there must be some basic etiquette that is common throughout. I have joined a smaller club with an indoor range during the winter and an outdoor range in the summer.

Comunicate with other shooters and agree someone should be the RO while shooting, everyone shoot from the same distance, carefully retreiving targets that kind of stuff,and clean up your own garbage including spent targets.
