i am having difficulty taking the grips off. i have move the lock all the way till i can see that it is no longer locking the grip in, but cant get the thing off. I even tried using a peice of wood to pry. Please any ideas? I dont want to crack the grip.

Mine were snug. The grips are pretty much jammed into the opening in the frame. Some careful blending of prying with a stick of wood from the inside and careful wedging of the lip from the outside with a knife worked for me.
Using the wood for the inside helped avoid a sharp stress point. I would not suggest using metal for this reason.
Once they were off I used a square file with one safe edge (a smooth non cutting face) to ease the edges of the raised portion so they still fit with a bit of snugness but little enough that just some pressure from a finger in the magwell is enough to pop them out.

I had the same problem, I used a flat head screw driver to get the grips off. Insert the screw driver in between the mag well spacer and the grip and twist gently, they should start to move. Once they're off you can use a knife to scratch off some of the plastic that goes inside the frame.
