So here it goes......
I am finally at the point where I have convinced myself I need an AR.
I've been toying with this idea for years.
So my question(s).......
What are your CGN suggestions for getting into this deep, dark aspect of shooting.
Although I do have an RPAL, I'm wondering if there are any non-restricted options worth looking at?
I have shot some ARs lately but do not like the feel of plasticky hand guards and clunky sounding rifles (no offence, just my preference).
The plan is for this to be a fun to shoot gun (definitely looking at .223, unless I should be convinced otherwise).
Is there a budget, yes of course, just not sure where it is yet (have to sell some target stuff on the EE).
Red dots, assist handles, etc I can borrow from some other projects.
Looking to buy once and not have to upgrade the base rifle, add-ons and swaps would be a future consideration.
I did enjoy shooting a new Tavor (sorry I forgot it was an AR question) but that is currently out of the budget.
If there s anything I forgot to mention please let me know.
Thanks in advance for all your expected help.

Lots of posts asking the same thing....which AR should I buy etc. Not trying to be that guy, but there really is a LOT of info on this very same question and many, many posts in response.

Get that one Canadammo is selling. 14.5 Anderson Arms free float keymod rail- $700 free shipping. Get a thousand rounds from Tenda for $350 after rebate.

OP:

When you're as in the dark about ARs as you describe, I don't think the "buy once cry once" rule applies much at all.

The AR is not at all like most other firearms where the core of the firearm isn't upgradeable. For ARs, the upper and lower receiver can be upgraded at any point, for basically a few hundred bucks each. So there's not really any disincentive to doing so.

I think it's a mistake to convince yourself that you're going to get the perfect AR for you on your first time out the gate. There are just too many variables. Better to get something cheap and cheerful and thereby learn about what you like and don't like, and have a boatload of fun in the process. If you "buy smart" then you'd lose very little or even make a few bucks IF you decide to resell.

If you are absolutely sure it will be unacceptable for you to upgrade the lower / upper receiver in the future, then any of the off-the-shelf AR options around $2K should be nice enough.

In any case, regardless of the price point, get an AR with a 14.5" or longer barrel. Shorter rifles are much more prone to reliability problems, which is a huge drag when you don't know how to fix them.

If you decide to go NR, it's generally going to be much more expensive - If a Tavor is out, then there is not much to choose from.

Where are you located? Maybe find a CGNer familiar with the AR platform, close to you where you can actually talk over your needs, wants and dislikes face to face while fondling the rifle. ARs don't have to feel plasticky or rattle. As everyone has said, there are just so many options with the AR that you can never find the one perfect rifle. That's why most guys who have ARs have at least 2 or 3!

Be prepared to spend money on gun and accessories. If you think you're comfortable getting close to $2000, then maybe the Tavor is within reach. The XCR-L and TAR-21 can be had for around $2000 now if you hit the right deal.

I am building one personally, never done one before in my life. I have only shot one, once in my life but I think its a really cool project to complete and it makes it your own.

Here is a sample spreadsheet I found, you can alter it as much as you like. You can definitely build one cheaper than below, for example you can still upgrade your trigger with an ALG combat for around 80bucks. You can get a decent BCG for around 200 or less . The Barrel you can save a few hundred on. There are cheaper hand guards out on the market such as magdump.ca. Just have to look around at prices, see if companies will price match to save on shipping etc. The planning/saving definitely takes more time than the actual building.

TNA, Saskatoon Gunworks, CTCSupplies are all great places for parts and accessories.
