Getting into coyote hunting.

Hi everyone, I am interested in getting started in coyote hunting.... well coyotes, fox etc. Can anyone tell me what laws govern this in NS? Also any help on getting started would be greatly appreciated! Should i bait them with meat? Should i call them? For the record I will be hunting on the South Shore of NS with an 8mm mauser fireing 170 grain winchester power points {i dont have anything else, and i dont reload} topped off with a leupold scope which i believe is a 3x7 40mm {by memory}. Again any help would be greatly appreciated!

I do have my licence. Since im not home right now would you be able to tell me what it applies to? Like would that be Coyotes, Foxes, Bobcat ......etc?

If I recall right you can hunt coyote in NS with a centerfire rifle until 31st of March. After that rimfire only! No bag limit! Coyotes are considered as 'other harvestable game' in the regulations. Many coyotes around this year! An e-caller works good.

Rimfire only??? Wow.... will my .22 take down a coyote? Martin do you mind letting me in on where these "many coyote" may be? hahahaha.

Coyotes in Nova Scotia may be hunted all 12 months of the year with a shotgun,rimfires only from Oct 15 to March 31 and centerfires from deer season (last Saturday of Nov I think until March 31 as well).Of course no Sunday hunting and you need a $3 Wildlife Habitat stamp available at any DNR office,Canadian Tire or Wal*Mart.

On page 57 of the NS hunting regulations it says:

'After the close of the open season for hunting deer, until
March 31 of the year following, a person may while hunting
coyotes use a center-fire, rimfire or muzzle loaded rifle or
shotgun with slugs or ball.'

The deer season extends from last Friday in October to and including the first Saturday in December. (excluding Sundays ) OCTOBER 27 TO DECEMBER 2, EXCLUDING SUNDAYS.

Means, after March 31 until 27th October you are not permitted to carry a centre-fire rifle in NS woods, hence you are only permitted to shot the yotes with muzzle or rim.

My comment:

Many of the hunting seasons are not set up to hunt during the natural, biological seasons. They are simply made to protect the game from poaching. In certains times the DNR likes to keep centre-fires rifles out of the woods to make the ID of poaching easier. If they hear a 'big bang' in summer, it is very likely a poacher, right?

Martin I made a mistake on the Deer season you are correct about the month,but I called DNR several months ago and specifically asked about the dates of each category of firearm and basically I was told the following:

Shotguns=all 12 months of the year
Rimfires=Oct 15-March 31
Centerfires=last Friday in Oct to & including the first Saturday in Dec

as I was interested in hunting coyotes throughout the year with my rimfire.

well i think that it might have to do with things like more people in the woods like bikers hikers campers etc and also turkey season starts right after march in ontario anyways not shure about the eastcost

Again, the last line (centrefires) is wrong. Look at the regulation Page 57. A well trained DNR representative should know that. Some trainees do not.

Again, the last line (centrefires) is wrong. Look at the regulation Page 57.
Assuming you are hunting for Coyote the centre-fire season ends 31st March. After that shotgun (not slugs!) or bow only.

Citation:

'Coyotes are classed as “other harvestable wildlife” and can be
hunted year round with NO bag limit. Coyotes may only be trapped
by licenced furharvesters during the regular season when traps and
snares may be used. Consult section Licence, Stamp and
Permit Regulations — Other Harvestable Wildlife (page 19)
to see who may hunt them. See section on Legal Firearms/Bows
and Ammunition — Other Harvestable Wildlife (Page 56)
for permitted weapons and ammunition.
Persons hunting coyotes are not required to wear hunter orange except
from October 1 to the end of the general open season for hunting deer.

Permitted are:

.40 calibre or less from October 15 to the last day of
