I think you have me confused with someone else BUT I do have several rebarreled remingtons. My jewel triggered rebarreled remington 700 vls pillared,bedded and chambered in 6x47 lapua by Ian Robertson would be competitive even against 22 lb open rigs......So for someone to say not to waist money on a remington, well, I have to disagree.......

I think I'm leaning towards a 700

Then for a scope, I went to Reliable gun the sales guy sold me on a Zeiss Conquest HD5 5-25x50. The clarity on the scope is amazing; I was amazed by how nice the image was, I was able to clearly read the sign about 3 vancouver city blocks away (~300 yards). I realized that I do not want any fancy crap on my scope, just something that can zoom in and not break if dropped(within reason). One of the best things was that I had found a $50 mail in rebate after the fact and they charged me the sticker price, not the new shipment price (1399 vs 1499). This is just another reason why I keep shopping at Reliable Gun.

You can go traditional m40a1 replica. With glass, you can dish out about 2.5k. Its a good round, lefty or righty, effective to 800-900 yards. If it interests you, I know where you can get all the parts. Only smithing needed would be the new barrel, and mating it to the action. Helps if you get it trued.

Parts are: Base 700, m24 contour barrel, McMillan m40a1 stock, mount, optic (that's all you, ###ual preference)

Long range known distance or unknown distance? If you get serious, especially shooting long range at unknown distances, the rifle is only 1/3ish of the cost at best. Range finder, wind meter, picking, learning and using a ballistic calculator, bipod, chassis, aftermarket trigger, maybe barrel, reloading gear and components plus time to shoot. Not being negative Nelly, just easing the shock a bit. Probably $6K all in once you are set with the basic system. I realize many of the other posters know the real cost of competitiveness, and can perform very well with basic factory systems, but that is often because they are much more skilled than they talk about.

Any Recommendations for a QUALITY rings for my Zeiss Conquest HD5 (1" body) and how about for a bipod? I am willing to spend $$ on good quality gear
 
Don't forget to leave some budget for ammo, match stuff is expensive and you'll need to shoot LOTS of it.

Then you'll need more budget to handload; the fun is just beginning.
 
just ordered a Harris S-BR Hinged 6 - 9 , i'll be waiting until I get my rifle to hit up reliable gun for rings. I'm getting a pelican case 1750 as well, looked into storm IM3300 its 4 pounds lighter, but at what cost of durability? Anyone have either or both?

With all the above (minus rings) im still 500 under budget including the scope. I've put in inquries on CDI bottom metal and a hornady AP progressive press with mystic precision. Will be getting the press by october, so until then factory rounds it is (gotta get my brass some how?).
 
As far as scopes go: I am another Sightron SIII fan. The price is reasonable and quality is really there.

Actually now the cadex field strike core seems more and more the way to go for 50mm lens and medium rings for the prs stock. Then I won't need to mess with bottom metals and such
