Getting into PRS - Tikka CTR 6.5CM vs Varmint in MDT XRS?

Sounds like a good plan! Just remember, just cause the strike eagle is $400 more doesn’t mean it’s a better optic.

I’d recommend looking at the reticles in the optics being suggested and picking the one you like the look of more. Both the DNT and Match Pro get raved reviews about value for dollar. Then you can start saving money and just enjoy learning until you’re ready for the next step up in optics.

If you’re looking for the next step up after either of those optics you’ll be in the $2k territory with the likes of Leupold Mark 4’s ($2400 - $2800) and Used Apex Rivals ($1700 - $1800).

Sorry, can someone explain the appeal of the 20" CTR over the 24" Varmint?

The Varmint has a heavier profile, which would be better for PRS in terms of weight and heat.
The only thing it lacks to the CTR that I can think of is a threaded muzzle, which a smith can easily fix.
What am I missing here?

Not missing anything. If a 24” Varmint can be found in 6.5 Creedmoor it’s a good option. Just have to get it threaded (+200$ ish)

considering it will take almost $5k worth of ammo to burn it out, I also agree that going with the heavier longer 24" varmint is a no-brainer.

Eagle Firearms in Tisdale SK shows 2 in-stock right now for $1625.
Additionally Reliable gun has the super varmint for $2062, which gets you the Varmint with Threaded barrel, plus cerakote, Fluted bolt, 2 stage trigger, and a fancy stock you'd probably get a few hundo for on the EE.

Curious if a 24” tikka varmint in 6.5 creed is even attainable in Canada right now without special order.

Prairieshots the problem solver! I did a quick search and found diddly. I’m sure the OP will read these posts. 👍

Tikka ACE Target also worth considering, you get the heavier profile varmint barrel that’s threaded and comes in a decent chassis so will save vs buying a XRS
